NPL1 Round 9 Wrap

Belconnen United 0 def by. Canberra Olympic 1 (Aisosa Ihegie 49’)

Canberra Olympic have put themselves on the cusp of the top four after defeating Belconnen United at McKellar Park on Saturday.

Belconnen was looking to have their revenge after Olympic dominated them 3-0 in their round 2 clash away at O’Connor.

Now with the home advantage, the Blue Devils looked in control throughout the first half, creating numerous goal scoring chances.

However, they could not stump Canberra Olympic goalkeeper James Christis, who was kept busy. He produced some quality saves to keep the score level heading into the half-time break.

The match's only goal came from Olympics’s Aisosa Ihegie early into the second half.

Ihegie slotted it into the bottom corner after a rebound from Belconnen goalkeeper Jordan Thurtell in the 50th minute, much to the delight of the Olympic fans.

Both sides struggled to progress the game further and Belconnen were unable to avenge their previous loss to Olympic.

Tuggeranong United 0 def by. Canberra Croatia 1 (Daniel Barac 48’)

It was a top vs bottom of the table clash at Kambah 2, with Tuggeranong United hosting Canberra Croatia FC on Sunday.

A win would secure top spot for Canberra Croatia with the West Canberra Wanderers suffering defeat to Monaro Panthers the previous day.

Tuggeranong United was looking to end their 6-game draw streak but knew the challenge ahead as Canberra Croatia was last to defeat them in round two, 4-1.

The action started early, with a goal line clearance from Croatia’s Mathew Waters in the fifth minute to the relief of goalkeeper Sam Brown, with Marco Geyer almost giving the home side an early lead.

Three minutes later at the other end, Jason Ugrinic found some space to line up a shot, hitting it just wide, beating Tuggeranong goalkeeper Jakeb Wiseman.

It was a familiar score for Tuggies heading into the second half, but only two minutes after kickoff Croatia’s Daniel Barac headed it in from a Nikos Kalfas cross putting the visitors 1-0 up in the 48th minute.

It was Tuggeranong’s seeming inability to score that held them back in the end as they could not find a solution to Croatia’s dominance, cementing themselves at the bottom of the table once more.

West Canberra Wanderers 1 (Gabriel Cole 50’) def by. Monaro Panthers 3 (James Wilson 14’, Kofi Danning 61’ (p), Ben Basser-Silk 82’)

The Monaro Panthers have continued their push towards the top four with a two-goal win over the high-flying West Canberra Wanderers at Melrose Synthetic on Saturday afternoon.

The first real chance of the game came to Tom McLachlan in the eighth minute as the midfielder got a shot off while surrounded by defenders but saw his attempt saved at the near post by Mason Interlandi in the Wanderers goal.

Panthers nearly had a goal off a corner in the 10th minute but it was disallowed because of a foul on the keeper. It mattered little however as they would take the lead minutes later with James Wilson tapped home following a corner.

Wanderers came close to equalising but were denied by a stunning diving save from Evan Alexandrow-Ridley, finding themselves a goal down at the break.

The home side got off to a quick start in the second half with Gabriel Cole finding the back of the net following a corner.

Panthers found themsleves back in front with Kofi Danning expertly slotting a penalty into the top corner. Ben Basser-Silk put the game to bed in the 82nd minute getting on the end of a dangerous McLachlan ball in.

The result sees the Panther continue their push to the top four, while Wanderers hold on to second place.
