Michelle Heyman Takes out Top Award

Gungahlin United NPLW player Michelle Heyman received the Westfield W-League’s highest honour last night, winning the Julie Dolan medal at the Dolan Warren Awards night.

The striker was recognised for her triumphant comeback season with Canberra United, where she managed to reclaim the Westfield W-League all time top goal scoring record.

“I think it's a nice way to top it off, coming out of retirement to play and then to be able to finally enjoy football again has been such a big thing for myself and to win this award it means everything,” Heyman said.

After spending some time off the pitch due to injury, Heyman made her return on the weekend with Gungahlin United FC.

On her debut at Gungahlin Enclosed, Heyman was subbed into the game on the 59th minute and capped off a 4-0 win for her side by scoring the only goal of the second half in the 85th minute.

“It's been a long time coming, I think this rehab for myself has been a little bit longer than planned,” she said.

“It's been a good 12 weeks without playing but I've been pushing myself in the gym and trying to get as fit as possible after my injury throughout the Westfield W-league so to get 30 minutes on the weekend with Gungahlin was super special.

“It's also been really nice to get to know the girls at Gungahlin and to help inspire them at training.

“Just to be a part of a Canberra club makes me really happy because I just want to give back to the community.”

Fans she once saw in the stands, now team mates in the top league in Canberra.

“Gungahlin's quite a young squad and I think that side of it as well is very enjoyable because you can see their eyes light up when we link up and combine at training,” she said.

“Just to see what these players are capable of and being able show them the level of what they need to do to be a Westfield W-League player, I think help inspires them and to push them if that's their dream.”

Gungahlin United FC is just one point shy of the top 4 but has a huge task ahead of them, when they take on Belconnen United FC on Saturday.
