Belconnen Ready for the Rematch

In their last encounter against Tigers FC, Belconnen United FC Head Coach Fabian Miceli admits his side fell asleep at the wheel.

“We only played for 85 minutes,” he said.

“We were 2-0 up and then we fell asleep in the last few minutes of the game and conceded two late goals.”

Belconnen struck early with a brilliant solo effort from Darren Bailey, who swerved past the Tigers to make it 1-0 at the 14th minute. Then in the second half, Luca Florez tapped it in from close range to make it 2-0.

It looked as in Belconnen was in control before Nick Popovic put the Tigers back into contention, chipping Belconnen’s goalkeeper Jordan Thurtell to get them on the board. And then in the 93rd minute, it was Julian Borgna who converted successfully to draw the game level, with the final score 2-2.

Miceli is confident his side won’t be letting a chance for the points slip through their grasp again in Round 11 of competition.

“It is absolutely crucial that we pick up some points and try and convert these good performances into wins to maintain the top four,” Miceli said.

“We’ve been sitting in fourth for about 4-5 weeks now and we need to try push and maintain that.”

Miceli keeping his eye on a number of key Tigers players, including Roko Strika, Antoni Timotheou, Nikolas Popovich and Lachlan Griffiths.

“We’re expecting a really tough game, they’re a really good side, they’ve got quality players all over the park.

“They will test us. But I believe in my squad and I believe we can get the three points.

“It is my first season in first grade and I am learning a lot along the way, it’s not easy but we’re trying to present a brand of football in Canberra that’s good on the eye and hopefully the results will follow.”

The two sides are meeting at Nijong Oval in Cooma on Sunday.

Kick off is 3pm.
