Gungahlin United Breaks into Top Four

Undefeated in June, Gungahlin United will look to keep that momentum going, after breaking into the top four on the NPL1 ladder for the first time since Round 2.

Gungahlin United striker Phillipe Bernabo Madrid has played a key role in Gungahlin’s impressive form over the last month.

“We are finally back in the top four and it is a great feeling, we're hoping to stay there for a long time,” Bernabo Madrid said.

“We have a healthy squad right now, which has been a big help and we know that if we win most of our games we're going to be there at the end of the season.”

With four goals in his last two games, Bernabo Madrid is currently joint top goal scorer in the NPL this season with eight goals.

Bernabo Madrid believes it is his teammate’s efforts and hard work that has helped Gungahlin find their form rather than just his goalscoring efforts.

“At the start of the season it was a new team, we had a big turnover of players, so it was always going to take time,” Bernabo Madrid said

“All the new boys have adapted to the philosophy and the Gungahlin way really well.

“Everyone is understanding their role better and it's always good to see us improving while still winning games.”

Gungahlin United take on the Monaro Panthers this weekend in a must win game for both sides.

Monaro are looking to claim necessary points to put more distance between them and relegation while Gungahlin are looking to maintain their position on the ladder, or better yet climb a couple rungs.

“It'll be a tough game, I know they've got some suspensions and some injuries, but we can still expect a tough game,” Bernabo Madrid said.

“They have a very strong squad all over the pitch, we as a team just need to keep believing in our philosophy and not stray from our style of football.

“I think if we can manage to do that, we'll have a big chance to win this weekend.”
