NPL1 Round 12 Wrap

West Canberra Wanderers 5 (Selden 2’ Paesler 57’ Cole 62’ Thornton 81’ Wiseman OG 83’) v Tuggeranong United 1 (Buesnel 30’)

A quick start for the West Canberra Wanderers saw them lead within two minutes at Melrose Synthetic, as Jaidon Seldon ran onto a through ball from Michael Mensah and took the ball round the keeper to slot it in an open net.

Tuggeranong continued to work back into the game throughout the first half and found an equaliser through Harrison Buesnel as he headed the ball from a corner into the net.

Things went from bad to worse for the Wanderers as a late challenge from Michael Mensah saw him receive a red card and leave the Wanderers down to ten men heading into half time.

Tuggeranong could not capitalise on the extra man advantage, with the Wanderers taking the lead again in the 57th minute.

Jackson Paesler calmly cut inside off the right wing and shot low and hard past the keeper to make it 2-1.

West Canberra proceeded to run away with the game with goals from Gabriel Cole, Shae Thornton, and an unfortunate own goal from Jakeb Wiseman that saw the Wanderers win the game 5-1 even with the 10 men disadvantage.

Gungahlin United 1 (Naumoski 17’) v Monaro Panthers 1 (Danning 45+1’)

A quick start to the game saw the Panthers miss a glorious chance as Stephen Domenici’s shot cannoned off the post in the 16th minute.

Gungahlin re-claimed possession to launch a counterattack straight away.

The ball fell to Misko Naumoski inside the box, and he made no mistake as he buried the ball into the bottom corner to give Gungahlin the early lead.

Monaro managed to equalise in first half stoppage time as Timothy Bobolas put in a pinpoint cross for Kofi Danning, who found himself unmarked in the box.

Danning headed it into the back of the net to tie the game up heading into half time at 1-1.

Both teams struggled to break down each other in the second half with no clear chances for either side.

The last ten minutes saw end to end football as both teams fought to steal the victory, constantly attacking one minute, and then defending the counter the next.

A mixture of tired legs and poor final passes meant neither team could create a definitive chance to win the game and the points were shared as the match ended 1-1.

Belconnen United FC 0 v Canberra Croatia FC 4 (Ugrinic 5’, Taneski 14’, 87’, Barac 57)

Canberra Croatia cruised to victory with a dominant 4-0 win against Belconnen United at McKellar Park on Saturday.

A goalkeeping blunder from Belconnen’s Jordan Thurtell caused the home side to concede early as he missed an attempted clearance which was tapped in by Jason Ugrinic in the 5th minute.

Nick Taneski then struck in the 14th minute after a long throw into the box from Captain Mathew Grbesa, giving the away side a 2-0 lead heading into half-time.

In the 57th minute, Daniel Barac put Canberra Croatia three goals up in style by flicking it over the head of defender Philippe Borgeaud and placing it in the bottom left corner just out of the reach of Jordan Thurtell.

Bagging a brace, Taneski sealed the deal for Canberra Croatia in the 88th, showing lovely composure and shooting it top left confirming his side's 4-0 victory.

Canberra Olympic 1 (Ihegie 73’) v Tigers FC 2 (Popovich 26’, Kelly 70’)

Tigers FC were triumphant against Canberra Olympic defeating the home side 2-1 at O'Connor Enclosed.

It was Olympic's Aisosa Ihegie who found himself behind the Tigers defence early on, shooting just wide in a one-on-one against goalkeeper Jakob Cole in the 2nd minute.

Nikolas Popovich gave the Tigers their breakthrough as the ball fell to his feet from a corner. He tucked it away giving them a 1-0 lead at the 27th.

Tigers then doubled their lead in the 70th minute with a strike from Jay Kelly, who smashed it past veteran goalkeeper Angelo Konstantinou to make it 2-0.

However, only a few minutes later, Canberra Olympic weren't going down without a fight when Ihegie was fouled in the box and Olympic was awarded a penalty. Ihegie fired it home, but it wasn't enough as Tigers FC claimed a 2-1 victory.
