Belconnen United Football Club has drawn one game and lost two this NPLW season, and they don’t plan on dropping any more.

“It’s pretty simple now, we can’t drop any points,” Captain Michaela Thornton said.

“We need to win every single game if we’re going to challenge for first spot so every game is a must win.”

Belconnen is nipping at the heels of top placed Canberra Croatia FC, even enjoying a few days at the top before Croatia played its Round 14 makeup match this week.

Thornton said the competition between the two sides is exciting.

“We need it and we need to be driven because if you’re too far and above on top which has happened in some seasons in the past, you can get a bit complacent and you can lose a little bit of the motivation towards the end of the season,” Thornton said.

“It’s definitely kept the intensity and motivation high at training.”

This weekend Belconnen heads to Hawker Football Centre to take on Canberra United Academy.

“A game against Academy is always a good game, they’re always really well coached and they’re a very technical side, and they’ll run for days,” she said.

“We’re generally pretty fit, we like to think anyway, whether we’re 15-year-old girl fit I don’t know,” Thornton joked.

“We have enough youth in our line-up.

“We’ve played Reilly Yuen for a lot of minutes and majority of our girls coming off the bench like Bianca Kimpton, Mon McGlynn, they’re similar ages and they can match it with anyone really.”

The game kicks off on Sunday at Hawker Football Centre from 4pm.
