Tuggeranong United 7 (Meg McLaughlin 2’, 21’, 26’, 50’, 69’, Emily Jensen 60’, Alison Corujo 89’)def. Canberra Olympic 2 (Siena Senatore 66’, Nat McCann 80’)

Tuggeranong United snapped their recent run of poor form with a thumping victory over Canberra Olympic at Greenway Enclosed on Sunday on the back of a five-goal haul from Meg McLaughlin.

McLaughlin wasted no time in getting started as she scored her first after just two minutes, before doubling the advantage in the 21st minute. The star forward completed her hat trick after just 26 minutes as Tuggeranong ran riot, however they slowed down as Olympic pushed back and the score remained just 3-0 at the break.

But McLaughlin was not done, and Tuggies came out of the break strong as she scored her fourth just five minutes into the second half. Emily Jensen added another ten minutes later as Tuggeranong pushed the lead to five goals before Olympic finally pulled one back on the 66th minute as Siena Senatore scored.

McLaughlin cancelled that one out three minutes later though as she completed her five-goal blitz, but with the game roaring back and forth Olympic’s Nat McCann also got on the scoresheet with ten minutes to go. Tuggeranong had one more in them though, and Alison Corujo hit back in the last minute of regulation to round off an emphatic victory for Tuggeranong, and keep them in touch with the top four.

Canberra FC 3 (Grace Gill 19’, Hayley McLachlan 65’, Chantel Jones 77’)def. Canberra United Academy 2 (Karly Roestbakken 45’, Aiofe Colvill 53’)

Canberra FC pulled four points clear of fifth place on Sunday with an entertaining 3-2 win over the Academy at Deakin. Both sides started quietly as they looked to sound each other out, but after a cagey opening ten minutes it was the hosts who struck first as Grace Gill fired home for the lead. The half continued as an even affair, however the Academy restored parity on the cusp of half-time as they were awarded a penalty.

Karly Roestbakken stepped up to take it and calmly slotted the ball into the top right corner to ensure her side went into the break on an even keel. The Academy came out of the break strong and went ahead after just eight minutes of the second half. Aiofe Colvill was sent racing through on goal and scored with a delightful chip over Nat Vasta in goals.

The hosts now needed to work their way back into the game and slowly began to as they took over more of the possession. And just 12 minutes after Academy took the lead it was all level again, as Hayley McLaughlin unleashed a perfect first-time strike that flew into the back of the net.

Canberra FC turned their attentions to the lead and it took only 11 minutes for them to find another goal, this time it was last week’s hero Chantel Jones who once more scored to put her side 3-2 up with just over ten minutes remaining. The home side rode out the remaining few minutes to take the win, and now sit just one point behind the Academy for third spot.

Woden-Weston FC 0 def. by Belconnen United 4 (Maddy Whittall 50’, Jasmine Maguire 57’, 66’, 72’)

Belconnen United continued their storming of the competition on Sunday as a four-goal second half saw them clinch a 4-0 win over Woden-Weston.

Both sides started slowly and struggled to get going, misplacing passes and turning the ball over. United came in off the back of their big win in the Federation Cup over Canberra FC, while Woden-Weston were looking for a win after Canberra FC pegged them back at the death last weekend.

As the game wore on both sides struggled to create chances going forward, and the first half petered out to finish goalless. However United came out of the break as a difference team, and Maddy Whittall scored her 20th goal of the season to give them a 1-0 lead just five minutes in. The visitors continued to push, and Jasmine Maguire netted seven minutes later for her first goal as United turned the screws.

The Wanderers struggled to get back into the game, and when Maguire scored her second and Belconnen’s third with 24 minutes to go, the match was effectively over. Maguire completed her hat trick with a well taken strike six minutes later to push the lead out to four, and there was no way back for the hosts.

Woden-Weston now look ahead to a matchup with Canberra Olympic to keep them in touch with the four, while
