Woden-Weston FC 4 (Lotta Raap 22’, 29’, Cassia McGlashan 43’, Sarah Whitfield 78’) def. Canberra Olympic 1 (Geraldine Longo 75’)

Woden-Weston bounced back from last weekend’s defeat to Belconnen United with a 4-1 win over Canberra Olympic on Sunday, helped by a double from Lotta Raap.

The Wanderers needed a win to keep clear of Tuggeranong United in the race for the top four, and Raap helped them out just after the twenty-minute mark as she fired home to give her side the lead. The home team continued to pressure the Olympic backline and Raap found her way through once more seven minutes later as she completed her brace and doubled the advantage.

Olympic looked to hit back but struggled to find a way through, and found themselves further behind as Cassia McGlashan extended the lead on the cusp of half-time. Both sides came out looking for goals, Olympic to get back into the match and the hosts to extend the lead, but neither side could find the target early on.

Geraldine Longo gave the visitors a sniff of hope with 15 minutes remaining as she scored to reduce the deficit, however Sarah Whitfield sealed the game for the hosts just three minutes later as she restored the lead to three goals and the end score line.

The result leaves Woden-Weston in fifth, three points behind the Academy, while Canberra Olympic remain winless on the season.

Gungahlin United 3 (Ashleigh Palombi 11’, 80’, Brittany Palombi 72’)def. by Canberra FC 4 (Najwa Allen (OG) 34’, Chantel Jones 38’, Marcia Wallis 42’, Erin Boxsell 70’)

Canberra FC found themselves on the right end of a high-scoring thriller once more as they came from behind to record a 4-3 win over Gungahlin United on Sunday.

Coming in off the back of a 3-2 win over the Academy last weekend, Canberra FC fell behind early as Ashleigh Palombi scored after just 11 minutes. The game stalled after the fast opening period however, but the visitors hit their straps just before half-time as a flurry of goals blew the game open. An own goal from Najwa Allen on 34 minutes levelled the scores for Mark Risteski’s side before Chantel Jones gave them the lead four minutes later as they grabbed the initiative.

It took only another four minutes for Marcia Wallis to extend the lead, and suddenly Canberra FC lead by two goals as the sides went into the break.

Things only got worse for Gungahlin as Ilahna Aitchison was sent from the field just five minutes into the second half, and Erin Boxsell appeared to have sealed the match when she scored with twenty minutes remaining.

But United were not done with, and Brittany Palombi reduced the deficit two minutes later as the hosts went on the front foot. Ashleigh grabbed her second with ten minutes to go to cut the deficit to one goal but were unable to find the final goal to tie it up as time petered out.

The loss leaves Gungahlin 12 points behind Belconnen United and only one ahead of Canberra FC as the race at the top heats up.
