NPLW Round 6 Wrap

Belconnen United 1 (Jessie Rasschaert 64’) def. Canberra United Academy 0

A second-half strike from Jessie Rasschaert was enough for Belconnen United to overcome the Canberra United Academy in a physical McKellar Park outing.

Full report here.

Woden-Weston 1 (Cassia McGlashan 90’) drew. Gungahlin United 1 (Charlotte Lynch 50’)

An equaliser in the dying stages of the match from Cassia McGlashan rescued a point for Woden-Weston against Gungahlin United in Round six.

Both sides were looking to build off important wins from last week, but the first half began slowly as far-from-ideal weather conditions made attractive football hard to come by.

There were still chances at both ends though and either side could have gone into the break with the lead but instead it was a goalless stalemate after 45.

That would not last long however, as a sublime strike from Charlotte Lynch gave the visitors a one-goal lead just five minutes into the second half and the confidence to go on with it. It looked like they would too, as Woden-Weston’s efforts were repelled strongly in trying conditions with time winding down.

But in the final minute of regulation a ball came firing in from out wide and skidded across the wet surface, and McGlashan read it best as she converted at the back post to level proceedings.

That was the final say of the game as it ended 1-1, leaving both sides with a point. United now face Belconnen United at McKellar Park on Saturday night, while Woden-Weston will take on the Academy at Woden Park on Sunday.

Canberra Olympic 2 (Bec Kiting 43’, Sally Rojahn 84’) def. by Monaro Panthers 3 (Zoe Szeremet 21’, 55’, 90’)

Monaro grabbed their first win of the season with a shock 3-2 victory over Canberra Olympic on Sunday, thanks in large part to a hat-trick from Zoe Szeremet.

Fresh off a six-goal haul in reserves, Szeremet and Monaro began strongly as she scored just 21 minutes in to the match to give the visitor something of an unexpected lead.

Olympic were looking to avoid a third loss in a row, and Bec Kiting helped allay those fears as she scored two minutes before half-time to put the hosts on level pegging heading into the break.

But Szeremet was proving to be a thorn in the side of Olympic and when she completed her brace just 10 minutes into the second half it was clear that this meant game on. Olympic pushed forward in a bid to bounce back, while Monaro looked to hold onto their advantage as the half wore on.

Six minutes from time it looked as though Olympic had staved off an upset as Sally Rojahn scored to level proceedings and maybe even give the hosts a chance at going for the win.

In the final minute however Szeremet rounded out a sensational day, finishing off a good move to complete her hat-trick, seal Monaro’s first win and move her side off the bottom of the ladder.

The loss is the third straight for Olympic after a strong start and will face Canberra FC in a big outing this weekend, while Monaro will take on Tuggeranong looking for another three points.

Tuggeranong United 0 def. by Canberra FC 5 (Grace Gill 5’, Rachael Goldstein 6’, 20’, Chantel Jones 18’, Jamie Berkeley 48’)

Canberra FC kept touch with the ladder leaders on Sunday as they turned in a thumping of Tuggeranong United.

The visitors set the tone early on through Grace Gill when she scored five minutes in, and Rachael Goldstein added a second just one minute later to leave Tuggeranong United reeling.

Mark Risteski’s side refused to drop the intensity and continued to push for more goals, and found another one just before the 20-minute mark as Chantel Jones found her way onto the scoresheet.

Goldstein completed her brace two minutes later and suddenly Canberra FC were four goals up inside the first 20 minutes and Tuggeranong were firmly on the back foot.

But the hosts looked to get back into the game and tightened up, holding out with no further goals until the end of the first half.

The second half appeared set to be more of the same as Jamie Berkeley scored just three minutes in, but to their credit United dug in and kept a clean sheet for the remaining 40 minutes.

The hefty loss is a big blow to United who now sit outright bottom ahead of a clash with Monaro this weekend, while Canberra FC will keep rolling into a meeting with Canberra Olympic.
