Canberra FC made it five from five to continue their perfect 2018 campaign by dispatching Belconnen United 5-0 at McKellar Park on Saturday night.

The win sees Paul Macor’s men maintain their position at the top of the table, while Belconnen have now lost four of their last five matches.

After an even start, the visitors struck first in the 28th minute as Finn Jurak failed to clear a high cross and Matthew Waters fired home the loose ball to give his side the lead.

Just nine minutes later they doubled their advantage, with the in-form Kofi Danning picking out Jordan Lamb essentially unmarked in the area and he fired home into the roof of the net.

In the aftermath of that goal Daniel Barac was handed a yellow card for dissent, and the game took a dark turn for Belconnen just minutes later as a rash tackle brought on his second yellow and the hosts were reduced to ten men.

Canberra FC headed into the break two goals up and with the man advantage, with Peter Mazis needing to adjust for the second half.

Visiting forward Thomas James came out strong to start the second half and looked to cause problems, and did just that 14 minutes in with one of the best goals of the season so far.

Waters picked out James with a looping cross-field ball to the corner of the area, and James let fly with a sensational first time volley that whistled past Jurak and into the back of the net to push the advantage to 3-0 and leave McKellar stunned.

On at half-time, Jason Ugrinic looked to force the issue for the hosts as he went by a couple of defenders but pushed his shot past the post of Sam Brown’s goal.

With 15 minutes to go three goals became four as James fired home a rebound from Jurak’s save to grab his brace and pile the pressure on further.

Macor’s men sealed the scoreline with seven minutes left as Marko Vrkic beat Jurak to a aerial ball to touch it past him and then knock the ball home to make it 5-0 with eight minutes left.

Canberra FC now turn their attention to a blockbuster Wednesday night FFA Cup clash with Canberra Olympic, while Belconnen travel to Griffith next weekend to take on the Rhinos.
