NPLW Round 13 Wrap

Monaro Panthers FC 1 (Alicia Meuronen 54') def. by Canberra Olympic Football Club 4 (Grace Field 14', Emma Guo 20', Meg McLaughlin 25', Kiara Gaspari 31')

Canberra Olympic snapped a recent run of struggles to record an important victory over the Monaro Panthers on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors had drawn with Woden-Weston during the week and were looking to make ground on Gungahlin United in fourth spot, and a four goal blitz in just over 15 minutes was more than enough to send them on their way.

Grace Field opened proceedings 14 minutes into the game, and before the Panthers could recover Emma Guo scored six minutes later to double the lead.

Meg McLaughlin got in on the act five minutes later and again it was a six-minute gap to the fourth as Kiara Gaspari finished off a good move to push Olympic’s lead out.

That left the hosts shell shocked, but they held out for the rest of the half and the gap remained four as the team teams headed into the break.

Monaro started the better of the two in the second half and got themselves on the board early through Alicia Meuronen’s strike, but that would be the end of the scoring as the match fizzled out for the final 35 minutes.

Canberra Olympic now face the Canberra United Academy in a crunch clash on Saturday, while Monaro are away to Woden-Weston on Sunday in round 14.

Canberra FC 0 def. by Belconnen United 2 (Bronte Pyke 20’, Sam Roff 51’)

Belconnen United grabbed a second victory over Canberra FC this year with a goal in either half of a game that featured a world-famous interruption.

Full report here.

Woden-Weston Football Club 3 (Jemima Millar-Carton 10', Cassia McGlashan 38', 82') def. Gungahlin United Football Club 0

Woden-Weston jumped back into the race for fourth spot with a strong three-goal win over Gungahlin United on Sunday.

Woden-Weston got the jump early against a flat United side, and Jemima Millar-Carton scored after ten minutes as she tapped home from a corner to put her side ahead.

The Wanderers continued to push with an effective long-ball game, and United struggled to cope against the hard-working hosts.

Seven minutes before the half they made it count as the ever-present Cassia McGlashan scored with a tidy finish to give her team a 2-0 advantage at the half-time break.

Both sides had played during the week but the hosts showed no signs of it, and after plenty of chances in the second half McGlashan scored her second eight minutes from time, tapping in to extend the lead and round out a perfect afternoon.

Woden-Weston will look to make further ground on the four when they host Monaro on Sunday, while Gungahlin face a tough outing against Belconnen United at McKellar Park.

Tuggeranong United Football Club 0 def. by Canberra United Academy 4 (Isabel Mulhall 6', Aoife Colvill 28', Hayley Taylor-Young 31', Sarah Morgan 57')

Tuggeranong United are still searching for their first victory of the season after going down to the Canberra United Academy by four goals.

The Academy started on the front foot and went ahead through Isabel Mulhall after just six minutes, and continued to push the envelope.

Aoife Colvill double the advantage with 28 minutes on the clock and three minutes later Hayley Taylor-Young took advantage of the hosts struggles to push the lead out to three goals, where it stayed heading into the break.

The second half began in similar fashion, and Sarah Morgan added a fourth 12 minutes in as the Academy continued to dominate the game.

Chances continued as the second half wore on but neither side were able to make them count, and the lead remained 4-0 at the final whistle.

Tuggeranong host Canberra FC on Saturday afternoon in round 14 while the Academy will meet Canberra Olympic.
