NPLW Round 14 Wrap

Canberra United Academy 6 (Aoife Colvill 22', 42', 44', 69', 83', 85') def. Canberra Olympic 2 (Meg McLaughlin 36', Grace Basser-Silk 55')

Canberra United Academy continued a strong run of form on Sunday thanks to a sensational six-goal haul from Aoife Colvill against Canberra Olympic.

The Academy came out of the blocks hard and looking to create chances, and Colvill grabbed her first of the afternoon 22 minutes in with a well-taken finish. Olympic hit back 14 minutes later though through Meg McLaughlin as she continued her strong season at a new club, but Colvill completed a hat-trick with a quick fire brace in the three minutes before the break to push the lead to 3-1 at half-time.

Olympic struck ten minutes into the second half to reduce the deficit though thanks to a goal from Grace Basser-Silk and it was game on at 3-2 with 35 minutes left to play. The Academy pushed on though and Colvill’s fourth with just over 20 minutes remaining seemed to be the straw that broke the camels back. She added two in three minutes inside the final ten to blow the scoreline out and leave Olympic four points out of fourth spot after two full cycles of matches and facing a tough test in Canberra FC next weekend.

For the Academy, they head in to a huge matchup with Belconnen United at the AIS on Saturday night, LIVE on BarTV Sports.

Tuggeranong United 1 (Sophie Bui 21') def. by Canberra FC 2 (Diarna Genovesi 23', Rachael Goldstein 66')

Canberra FC kept in touch with Belconnen United at the top of the table as they claimed a narrow win over Tuggeranong United at Kambah.

United got on the board first as Sophie Bui scored 21 minutes in but the lead lasted merely two minutes. Diarna Genovesi scored almost immediately after as Canberra FC looked to take over the game and got into gear.

But the game remained poised at 1-1 as the two teams headed into the half-time break, with Tuggeranong United likely the happier of the two.

The visitors came out strong in the second half though, and 21 minutes in Rachael Goldstein made their pressure count, scoring to break the deadlock and put her side ahead.

The game would stay that way for the final 24 minutes, drawing Canberra Fc to within three points of Belconnen United while Tuggeranong remain winless on the bottom of the table.

Belconnen United 1 (Caitlin Munoz 62’) drew. Gungahlin United 1 (Melissa Bunker 67’)

Belconnen United dropped points for the first time all season as they were held to a draw by a determined Gungahlin United outfit on Saturday night.

Woden-Weston 1 (Geraldine Longo 51') def. by Monaro Panthers 2 (Alicia Meuronen 37', Zoe Szeremet 78')

Monaro claimed their fourth win of the season and put a further dents in the finals hopes of Woden-Weston with an impressive 2-1 win at Woden Park on Sunday afternoon.

Both sides started well in the important clash, but as the first half wore on Monaro began to create chances and look for an opening. And eight minutes before half-time they found it as Alicia Meuronen gave them a well-deserved lead to take into the break.

Woden-Weston came out of half-time strong though, and when Geraldine Longo netted just six minutes in to the second stanza it was game on with just under 40 minutes to play. But Monaro would not be denied and with 12 minutes left Zoe Szeremet tucked home her eighth goal of the season to give her team the lead and they did not look back, seeing out the game.

The win brings Monaro to within two points of the Wanderers after two full cycles of matches ahead of a meeting with Gungahlin United in Round 15. For Woden-Weston they will face Tuggeranong United looking to keep in some touch with fourth spot.
