Determined Gungahlin take a point at McKellar

Belconnen United and Gungahlin United played out an entertaining 1-1 draw on Saturday night as the hosts failed to win for the first time this season.

Antoni Jagarinec's side strated well and had much of the ball early, while the visitors dropped back and looked to hold out under the weight of possession.

The Blue Devils were making their dominance count and created a number of good chances but Kailey Tonini was up to the task in the Gungahlin goalmouth, making a couple of good saves early, first to deny a shot from a corner with her foot and then keeping out Maddy Whittall in a one-on-one situation.

She was called into action not long after to keep the hosts out again, but her side slowly worked their way back into the game with Nat DeMarco influential through the middle.

The two teams headed into half-time locked all square and with no clear indication of who was on top heading into the second 45.

Gemma Murphy had a great chance early in the second half but opted to pass out of the area rather than shooting after a good cross from Whittall, and Gungahlin survived once more.

But that would only last so long, and a sublime ball found Ellie Raymond driving into the right side of the area and she was brought down for the hosts to be awarded a spot-kick.

Caitlin Munoz stepped up and made no mistake to give Belconnen the lead and there were some fears that the goal may trigger the floodgates as it can so often do.

But instead the visitors got on the front foot and five minuets later Mel Bunker chipped Nat Lacey with a great header after an inch-perfect cross came in from the right.

There was still time to play and the only real chance came as Caitlin Munoz headed at Tonini with 15 minutes left, but the game petered out with the teams sharing the spoils.
