NPLW Round 17 Wrap

Tuggeranong United 0 def. by Belconnen United 6 (Jasmine Maguire 7', Caitlin Munoz 29', Jessie Williams 45', Bronte Pyke 60', 73', Leah Carnegie 70')

Three goals in either half was enough for Belconnen United as they completed a season sweep of Tuggeranong in a 6-0 victory.

Belconnen came out of the blocks fast and took the lead after seven minutes through Jasmine Maguire, and doubled it just before the half-hour mark when Caitlin Munoz headed home a cross into the back of the net. And just as it looked like the side would carry their two-goal lead into the break Jessie Williams struck on the stroke of half-time to extend the lead to three goals at half-time.

They came out on fire in the second half as well and it took only a quarter of an hour for Bronte Pyke to push the lead out to four goals as they took over the game completely.

Leah Carnegie scored with twenty minutes to go and three minutes later Pyke netted her second and Belconnen’s sixth to round out the scoring for the visitors.

The result continues Belconnen United’s undefeated season ahead of a big clash with Canberra Olympic on Saturday. For Tuggeranong it was another loss in a tough season and they will visit Gungahlin United on Sunday afternoon at Gungahlin Enclosed.

Monaro Panthers FC 0 def. by Canberra FC 3 (Marcia Wallis 31', Rachael Goldstein 80', 86')

Canberra FC continued their hold on second spot as a strike from Marcia Wallis and Rachael Goldstein’s brace gave them a 3-0 victory over Monaro Panthers.

Canberra FC came in off the back of a loss to Canberra Olympic and a draw with Gungahlin United and the Academy closing in, while Monaro came in off the back of two consecutive losses to Gungahlin and Belconnen United.

The game began evenly, but the competitions second-placed side soon began to work their way into the contest and take over, and their pressure paid dividends as Marcia Wallis scored the first goal of the match in the 31st minute.

The margin remained at one goal at the break with just Wallis’ strike to separate the teams and chances not taken at both ends.

The second half began slowly and both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances going forward. With the game continuing on Monaro were looking for ways to get back into the match and the visitors were trying to extend the lead and seal the contest.

They finally found that with ten minutes left as Rachael Goldstein scored and when she doubled her tally six minutes later it sealed the scoreline and the result.

The three points keeps Canberra FC four points ahead of the Canberra United Academy for second spot, while Monaro remain second bottom on the table.

Gungahlin United Football Club 2 (Mel Bunker 57’, Nat De Marco 74’) def. by Canberra United Academy 4 (Laura Hughes (2), Aoife Colvill (2))

Gungahlin United slipped out of the top four on the weekend as they fell 4-2 to an energetic Canberra United Academy side.

A goal in each half from both Laura Hughes and Aoife Colvill was enough for the Academy despite a second-half push from United as the game got away from them.

The Academy got on the front foot early and looked to take the game to United but the hosts were strong and it was a back and forth encounter early until Laura Hughes scored after 20 minutes as she pounced on an error in the Gungahlin backline and 10 minutes later Aoife Colvill added a goal to give Ryan Grogan’s side a 2-0 lead at the break.

Hughes scored her second shortly after half-time to push the lead out to three but United gave themselves a way back into the contest as Mel Bunker scored 12 minutes into the half. They fought on for another goal but Colvill cut short the comeback with her second goal to push the lead back out with nearly half an hour left to play.

United gave themselves another stiff as Nat De Marco scored from the penalty spot with 16 minutes to play, but that was as close as the hosts got as time ran out.

Canberra Olympic Football Club 8 (Meg McLaughlin 4’, 7’, 22’, 53’, 80’, 90+2’, Grace Maher 23’, Sally Rojahn 40’) def. Woden-Weston 2 (Anna Vandenbroucke 46’, Sarah Whitfield 68’)

An incredible six-goal performance from Meg McLaughlin helped Canberra Olympic to an 8-2 win over Woden-Weston at O’Connor on Sunday afternoon.
