Key Moments |

Goal: The Rhinos failed to clear and paid for it as Ryan Keir took a touch just outside the area before smashing an effort past the keeper.

Goal: The visitors broke forward from the back and Barac was played through and raced away from the defence before calmly slotting home his first.

Goal: Nikola Jadric picked up the ball in midfield and drove hard at the backline before slipping Barac in to grab his second.

Red Card: Down three goals already, the Rhinos job was made harder as Joe Preece was sent from the field for his second yellow inside the final ten minutes.

Monaro Panthers 4 (Sam Smith 25’, Niko Kalfas 35’, Josh Gulevski 74’, Adam Neou 77’) def. Tuggeranong United 1 (Aisosa Ihegie 89’)

By Rhyan Misner

Monaro Panthers fine form continued on Saturday evening when they recorded their third win of the season with a resounding 4-1 victory over Tuggeranong at Riverside stadium.

United were coming into the match fresh off the bye while Monaro picked up three points away from home against Olympic so both teams were eager to keep their season moving and climb the ladder.

Both sides began the match sloppily, struggling to find any rhythm on the slick Riverside pitch, though it was Tuggeranong who had the first sights at goal, Verncombe and Slavich firing in long range efforts at the Monaro goal with neither testing Nathan Alferink.

Monaro answered back in the 21st minute when Sam Smith swiveled in the box, only to see his low drive fly narrowly wide of the upright.

The Panthers were beginning to have some joy on the wings and there was no surprise when their first goal came from that route.

Michael Rinaudo attacked his defender from the right side and drilled a low cross to the back post where he found Sam Smith who had no trouble dispatching from close range and put Monaro ahead with 25 minutes played.

The goal ignited the home side, creating back-to-back chances through Smith and Gulevski which could have extended their advantage.

They only had to wait 10 minutes to go two in-front though as Nikos Kalfas made the most of his early impact.

Out on the left, Kalfas isolated his defender one-on-one and twisted past him before firing an shot from inside the box into the top corner making it 2-0.

It stayed this way as the teams went into the halftime break, the home side two to the good.

Tuggeranong brought on Marco Gayer and Pojohishgar at halftime in an attempt to change their fortunes.

The second half began similarly to the first, neither Monaro or Tuggeranong being able to gain a foothold and this favored the hosts and their lead.

Tuggeranong could have pulled one back as the game entered the final 20 minutes but Aisosa Ihegie could only fire over from point blank range after a free-kick was swung in.

The Panthers made them pay 3 minutes later when the ball was nodded down to Gulevski from a corner, and he smashed home an effort that flew past Tuggeranong goalkeeper Jakeb Wiseman.

The points were all but confirmed shortly when a delicate through from Emilio Kista found Adam Neou in behind the Tuggeranong back four and he took a touch calmly before firing past Wiseman and into the goal in one motion.

Tuggeranong’s woes were compounded when Jono Turek given 10 minutes on the sideline for dissent, but they managed a consolation with a minute left to play when some lovely passing inside the box was finished off by Ihegie.

The win sees Monaro move up to third on the table ahead of the bye, while Tuggeranong will head back to the drawing board with a clash against Belconnen United looming.

Canberra Olympic 2 (Stephen Domenici 43’, 57’) def. Belconnen United 0

Canberra Olympic bounced back from last week’s loss to Monaro with a two goal win against Belconnen thanks to a brace from Stephen Domenici at O’Connor. The win keeps Olympic in outright second and on the tail of Tigers FC.

Key Moments |

Goal: Stephen Domenici was quickest to react after Jay Kelly’s first-half strike could only be parried by Finn Jurak, and he got infront of his defender to sneak the ball home and put his side ahead at the break.

Penalty shout: Belconnen fired a shot into an Olympic body and appealed for handball, but their shouts were turned down by the referee.

Penalty & Goal: Shortly after, Olympic were awarded a penalty for handball up the other end, and Domenici stepped up to fire home the sealer. Phil Borgeaud was given a temporary dismissal for his protests.

Crossbar: Belconnen were searching for a way back in, and they didn’t come much closer than Daniel Sparrow whose wicked strike from out wide hit the bar and bounced clear of danger.
