NPLW Round 13 Wrap

Tuggeranong United 1 (Kristy Helmers 75’) def. by Belconnen United 5 (Keira Bobbin 6’, 68’, 78’, Own Goal 10’, Nicole Jalocha 42’)

A hat-trick from Keira Bobbin helped Belconnen United overcome an understrength Tuggeranong United side 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at Kambah.

Tuggeranong lost a goalkeeper and defender before the game even began, and Bobbin made the most of the rejigged backline with a goal six minutes in when she raced onto a through ball and converted, and just four minutes later Nicole Jalocha’s cross ricocheted off Lara Mustaine to fool the keeper and nestle in the back of the net.

Jalocha got a light touch on a cross from the right three minutes before the break to leave Belconnen up 3-0 after 45 minutes, and Tuggeranong on the back foot having made all three subs by the time the second half started.

They pushed to begin the half though, but couldn’t keep Belconnen out forever and Bobbin grabbed her second with a nice finish from a tight angle, but ten minutes later Tuggeranong pilled one back through Kristy Helmers.

She chased a long through ball that was passed back to the keeper, and consistent pressure forced a mistake and freed up the ball for her to pass it into an open net and get United on the board.

Bobbin completed her hat-trick shortly after, first to the rebound after Michaela Day’s set piece was well saved.

Both sides will now have the weekend off, with Belconnen resuming on the 20th July against Woden-Weston, while Tuggeranong’s clash with the Academy may be rescheduled

Wagga City Wanderers 0 def. by Canberra FC 10 (Brittany Palombi 8’ 26’, 37’, 56’, 58’ (p), 71’, 79’, Mel Bunker 21’, 68’, Vanessa Ryan 46’)

A seven-goal haul from Brittany Palombi helped Canberra FC to a thumping 10-0 win over the Wagga City Wanderers in their NPLW Round 13 clash on Sunday.

Palombi got Canberra FC underway in perfect fashion as she scored after just eight minutes, and after Mel Bunker added a second Palombi ran riot in the first half to bag a hat-trick inside 37 minutes of the half, and leave Canberra FC with a commanding 4-0 lead at the break.

In the second half was where they really stamped their authority down though, with Vanessa Ryan scoring their fifth just a minute in, and 10 minutes later it was Palombi again as she netted a fourth for herself and sixth for the team.

Two minutes later she had a fifth, this time from the spot and Bunker added a second of her own to blow the lead out further with 22 minutes to play as Palombi turned provider, and the Wanderers were reeling under the weight of Canberra FC’s possession.

There was still time for Palombi to net two more, the first as she was played in by Jamie Berkeley and the second a finish from close range at the back post to round out the scoring.

Both teams have a break this weekend, before Canberra FC host Monaro the following week while the Wanderers will have an extended break thanks to the bye.

Gungahlin United 3 (Rachael Corbett 25’, 76’, Nat De Marco 47’) def. Woden-Weston FC 0

By Jakob Gisik

A Rachel Corbett double and a dominant Nat De Marco has lifted Gungahlin United to a 3-0 win over Woden-Weston FC at GEO on Sunday afternoon.

The result leaves Woden’s finals chances hanging by a thread, with the Wanderers now sitting nine points behind the top four in fifth place.

Gungahlin started the better of the two sides and missed two golden opportunities to take an early lead.

Nat De Marco headed over the bar in the 19th minute after finding herself unmarked in the penalty area, before Corbett had a strong shot denied by Woden goalkeeper Lilian Geale three minutes later.

The hosts wouldn’t come to rue their missed chances though, as Corbett headed home an Ella Brown corner in the 25th minute to put her side ahead 1-0.

Woden slowly worked into the match and Sophia Christopherson began to cause the Gungahlin defence some headaches down the right flank.

The visitors’ best chance of the half came in the 42nd minute when Anna Vandenbroucke intercepted a back-pass and sent a powerful strike towards goal, only to see it cannon off the crossbar.

Gungahlin then delivered a huge blow straight after half-time when Stella De Marco raced to the by-line and cut the ball back to sister Nat, who flicked it past Geale with a lovely touch off the outside of the left-boot.

Marija Rathouski nearly scored five minutes later after she pounced on a loose ball and fired a low shot on target, but Geale managed to get an outstretched foot to the ball to keep her side in the match.

The Wanderers weren’t short on chances themselves and should have pegged one back through Annica Schoo in the 67th minute.

Briana Maguire stole the ball and laid it off to an unmarked Schoo inside the penalty area, but the Woden substitute – who had almost too much time –sprayed her shot over the crossbar from eight yards out.

That would prove to be Woden’s final chance, as Corbett headed home another corner shortly after to seal all three points for her side.

Gungahlin can now enjoy the week off thanks to a competition-wide bye, while Woden will play Canberra Olympic on Saturday in their re-scheduled round seven clash.
