Trusting the Process – Brindabella Blues rebuilding in NPL2

By Jeremy Magan

After a torrid debut NPL2 season, the Brindabella Blues are looking for a fresh start in Capital Football's second tier in 2020.

With only two wins last season, and the worst offensive and defensive records in the league, the Blues simply aim to do better. To achieve that, recruiting the right coach was imperative.

Eighteen months after he last sat on an NPL bench, Zoran Glavinic joined the club at the end of last year and this weekend, he will finally sit on the sidelines again.

The former Canberra FC coach, a side he led to the NPL Grand Final twice in 2015 and 2016, was seduced by the Blues’ project when he met BBFC Technical Director Lino Fiorese.

“Lino has implemented things in Brindabella that I was looking forward to being a part of," Glavinic said. “The objectives are to develop a young squad and to put in place the structure to allow these players to compete at a high level in the future."

He starts the competition with an 18-men squad, a third of which are young club talents that were a part of last year’s U18 team.

The upcoming short season will be about team building more than performance. Glavinic’s focus will be first and foremost solidifying his team’s defense. His plans will not depend on who they are facing either.

“We won’t be concentrating on other teams,” Glavinic said. “We will just play our game and implement our philosophy.”

There are clear long-term objectives too, with Glavinic's ambition to compete for top tier promotion in “two or three years down the track”.

“We want to walk away from the season looking forward to 2021 and d keep bringing young players into a stronger team," he said.

With the green light now given for games to be played this weekend, Brindabella Blues FC will host NPL2 newcomer, Yoogali SC, on Saturday at 4.30pm in Calwell.

Glavinic and Brindabella's philosophy rings true when it comes to the coach's expectations for Matchday One.

“If we end up coming out with 3 points, that would be a great start, but if we don’t, it’s not a big deal, we will work on it for next week.”
