NPL1 Round 2 Wrap

Canberra Olympic 3 (Crawford 62’, 84’ Ihegie 90 + 4) beat Belconnen United FC 0

In a game that was always going to be an even match up, defence held strong in the first 45 between these two sides.

Belconnen were the aggressors in term of attacking intent but just like in Round 1, Canberra Olympic was quiet in the first half, only to come out firing after the break.

At minute 62 Olympic’s James Crawford scored his first goal in the NPL1, taking advantage of an error from Belconnen’s goal keeper Jordan Thurtell to slot the ball right past him.

A superb run from Elie Darwich up the left hand side flank, saw him jump over the sliding goalkeeper, to get the ball to Crawford who sealed the deal for Olympic. The goal, earning the young a brace and Man of the Match honours from his club.

Finishing the job off would be Aisosa Ihegie, who hurled the shot into the top right-hand corner.

Monaro Panthers 1 (Domenici 83’) def by West Canberra Wanderers 2 (Ospini Colorado 12’, Cole 65’)

The West Canberra Wanderers stamped their authority on the game in the 12th minute of this Round 2 match up when a cross from Alexandru Uricru was sent to Juan Ospini Colorado, who performed a stunning strike.

The second came in the 65th minute when a run up the right hand side flank led to a rocket being sent towards goals, headed in by Gabriel Cole.

A couple more attempts were to be made from Woden Weston but the hosts did a good job in shutting them down.

A saving grace came in the 83rd minute for the Monaro Panthers, when a penalty kick by Stephen Domenici easily got past the Wanderers’ goal keeper, to get the hosts on the scoreboard.

Canberra Croatia 4 (Barac 5’, 43’, Ugrinic 28’, 57’) beat Tuggeranong United 1 (Slavich 76’)

A quick start from Canberra Croatia saw them lead within 5 minutes at Deakin Stadium as Daniel Barac scored his first after Canberra Croatia won the ball from a lazy Tuggeranong clearance and the striker capitalised on some poor defending.

Canberra Croatia would continue to dominate the first half with Jason Ugrinic getting his name on the scoresheet and Daniel Barac scoring his second, leading to the game being 3-0 at half time.

Tuggeranong would start the second half off strong with a few early chances, however a second goal for Jason Ugrinic against the run of play would halt Tuggeranong’s newfound momentum.

Tuggeranong were given a glimpse of hope as substitute Andrew Slavich rifled his shot from 25 yards out into the net with 15 minutes to go.

Although it was too little too late for Tuggeranong and the game would finish 4-1 to Canberra Croatia as they continue their impressive start to the season.

Gungahlin United 1 (Bernabo-Madrid 5’) def. by Tigers FC 2 (Strika 7’, Green 40’ (og))

Gungahlin United got on the scoreboard first, thanks to a free kick from Philippe Bernabo-Madrid in the 5th minute. That would be the hosts one and only for the afternoon.

It would take two minutes for the guests to strike back with Roko Strika coming from nowhere to slot it in from a kick out wide.

It looked as if the Tigers would be up to 2 in the 8th minute when number 98 took his shot but it went straight into the keeper’s hands.

It would have remained an even contest if not for an own goal from Gungahlin defender Jack Green, who looked to deflect a missile sent from out wide, only to clip it over his own goalkeeper, into the back of the net.
