The last of the history makers

MAC Hunter, the last surviving member of the WA State team that made history when winning the Southern States Carnival in Adelaide in 1948, has died.
David ‘Mac’ Hunter, who was born in Newcastle in England, was aged 93.
‘Mac’ arrived in Western Australia in 1927 and developed from a junior and Ex-Scholar player
at the famous Victoria Park club to that of a senior midfield signing for South Belmont SC.
He remained faithful to the club until it withdrew from competition in 1950.
“Mac’ was one of the triumphant 1948 State players that clinched its first silverware, the Southern States Carnival, in South Australia.
He had an uncle (George Moir McKenzie) who was one of Victoria Park’s finest players.
Perth football historian Richard Kreider, author of Paddocks to Pitches, the history of the game in WA, organised a reunion of three of the players who took part in that 1948 Carnival three years ago.
He brought together 'Mac' Hunter, his WA team-mate Bob Cherry and South Australian player Paddy Cranswick, who was visiting Perth at the time.
"They had a great time reminiscing about the good old days," recalled Richard.
"The get-together was particularly satisfying for Bob and 'Mac' hadn't seen each other for 50 years."
Bob Cherry, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame WA's Hall of Champions in 1996, died in January, 2013, just short of his 91st birthday.
