Last week the annual Ralph Robertson Lecture with the subject:The First Club Game of Football in Sydney (1881) was held at the Club Swans at the Cross.
Prior to the talk the NSW Australian Football History Society was launched. This received scant publicity but is an important vehicle in the developing infra-structure of Australian Football in Sydney.
A committee of ten were elected headed by former NSW AFL CEO, Ian Granland, OAM who is particularly excited about this new venture.
"We have had the NSW Aust Football History Committee doing it's bit in recent times" Granland said "but the whole level of interest in Sydney's football past has gone up a peg and what better way to cater for this increasing fascination than to establish a Football History Society This will allow more to join and almost perpetuate the organisation."
"The Society has three levels of membership: Ordinary - for members of the general public, club or association and corporate. We are keen to get people signed up and get them involved in the activities of the Society. It really does have great potential with workshops, visitations, lectures, collection and maintenance of memorabilia etc. The mind really boggles as to where the group can go."
Anyone interested can contact Mr Granland on 0412798521.
Added to this are the similar Interstate Football History Societies and groups many of who are keen to establish an Australian Chapter in order to co-ordinate football history activities nationally.
