The Belconnen Magpies Football Club (BMFC) is very pleased to announce that coach Jeremy Rowe and senior players have committed to the club for the 2015 season. The Belconnen Magpies will field its senior team in AFL Canberra’s First Grade competition next year, after deciding not to remain in the NEAFL.
Rowe joined Belconnen Magpies as senior coach at the beginning of 2014 and said it was an easy decision to stay with the club that has welcomed him into its fold and that he now calls home.
“While it is no doubt disappointing that we will not be playing in the NEAFL in 2015, the football club will continue to prepare itself as a professional outfit, striving to improve footballers and achieve on-field success,” Rowe said.
“The 2015 season presents a new challenge for us. We are excited about it and will attack the season with all of our energy.”
“I am happy with how the playing list is shaping up and we should be able to present a very competitive outfit on the field.”
With four of its most senior players committing to the club, Belconnen Magpies retains a huge amount of first-grade playing experience. Club captain Lexie Bennett (195 games), vice-captain Chris York (175 games), gun midfielder Ryan Turnbull (152 games) and 2013 Mulrooney Medallist and playing assistant coach James Bennett (131 games) will form a core part of the 2015 Belconnen Magpies side.
Also exciting for the club is the number of talented junior players at the club who will transition to the senior team in 2015.
Belconnen Magpies President Scott Reid said that while the club will be playing in the AFL Canberra competition next year, it will not be taking backward steps in being a professional outfit and providing a pathway to senior football for local junior players.
“We showed with our performances in the latter part of this year that we are a strong Canberra club both on and off the field and we have expectations on ourselves to maintain this going forward,” Reid said.
“These signings are a major part of the Club’s goal to transition back to the AFL Canberra competition with a strong complement of our largely home-grown playing list.”
“All four players are local juniors who have developed through Belconnen’s junior clubs to become
high quality footballers.”
“The Club expects to announce further signings in coming weeks as players continue to commit,” Reid said.
