The Tuggeranong Hawks have an array of talented players that make up their current team, one being key forward Matthew Ghirardello.
Kicking four goals on the weekend in a dominant display against Eastlake Demons leads to an expectation that there is more to come from the Hawks number one this season. Here is a few things you may not know about Matthew Ghirardello.
When did you start playing AFL? I have been playing AFL since I was 6 years old and had one year off after under18’s and played soccer. I then got back into AFL and started with the Hawks.
Which team did you support while growing up? Always supported Essendon, it is a difficult situation that they are in at the moment, but hopefully they stay competitive this year.
What was one of your fondest memories growing up? I have a lot of footy memories from juniors playing with the Bulldogs and being coached by my Dad. We had a great team and hardly ever lost a game.
In seniors for Tuggeranong Hawks definitely playing the Sydney Reserves at ANZ Stadium I managed to kick 7 goals in the second half all while having the Geelong cheer squad cheering me on as we were playing the curtain raiser before the Swans v Geelong Game.
The following year I went on and played for the Redland Bombers in the QAFL which was also a great experience.
What is your most embarrassing moment? Probably, kicking 1 goal 7 while playing for Redlands against Northern Territory Thunder but somehow still managing to get the three votes.
Is there a current AFL player who you model your game on? Um, maybe someone like Tom Hawkins, he has a very strong contested mark and has two oak trees for quads.
What are your personal goals for this year’s Competition? Personal goals are to stay fit, play my role in the team and enjoy the year.
As the season takes a break over the ANZAC Day long weekend, now is the time for all teams to refresh, evaluate, and train to come back next week fighting.
