PLAYSTATION 4 VICTORY LEAGUE TEAM OF THE WEEK – ROUND 2

This week’s Playstation 4 Victory League Team of the Week is in 1-3-4-3 formation. South Hobart and Hobart Jeep Zebras were the big winners and as a result have the major representation, with three and four players respectively picked in this week’s best 11.

We have trimmed down at the back in order to squeeze in four midfielders that played a significant part in their team’s winning performances at the weekend so we must apologise to those defenders that fell agonisingly short, South Hobart’s Matt Lewis and Kingborough’s Nick Cuhtbertson are two players in particular that were unlucky to miss the cut, with just three backs squeezing into our 11.

South Hobart had a swag of fine performers in their barnstorming win over Devonport at Valley Road. Along with Lewis, Chris Downes was sharp, Liam Quaile wasn’t overawed and Joe Stevens was outstanding in midfield, has a really cool head on his shoulders and he was key for them in the big win, but unfortunately he doesn’t quite slip into the Team of the Week for Round 2!

In other unlucky absentees from this week’s all star side, Danny Cowen misses out, netting two in Kingborough’s win over Glenorchy but he can’t quite find a place in the team, while Toby Omenihu played a key role in Launceston City’s 2-2 draw v their fierce rivals, Northern Rangers but can’t quite sneak in.

 TOTW - R2

GOALKEEPER

Graham Wright – Hobart Jeep Zebras

Zebras Scottish ‘keeper Wright kept the only clean sheet of Round 2, he pulled off some strong stops when called upon and was vocal in a disciplined defensive display from the Zebras.

DEFENDERS

Connor Schmidt – South Hobart

Schmidt has taken to the PS4 Victory League like a duck to water. Two matches and two appearances in the team of the week! Schmidt kick started South Hobart with an amazing assist for Brayden Mann in the opening minute and also crunched a cracking goal of his own in the second half, all while clamping down on Devonport’s Michael ‘Turtle’ Holden.

Nathan Cook – Hobart Jeep Zebras

Safe to say this Cook doesn’t mind the heat in the kitchen, Cook has slotted nicely into the Zebras defence and backed up a good first round display with another strong performance at the back. Was gritty and uncompromising at the back, heaved it clear when he had to but for the most part was measured, while also being adventurous with attacking runs forward to overload the Warriors defence.

Dom Rossi – Launceston City

Rossi played mainly on right wing but is no stranger to defence and spent some time at left back against the Rangers. Looked lively every time he got on the ball, provided some class to City pushing forward and posed questions of the Rangers defence. Earned the penalty for City’s second.

MIDFIELDERS

Jayden Hey – Hobart Jeep Zebras

Hey returned to the explosive Jayden Hey we’d come to know and enjoy from his 2013 Mitsubishi Motors Medal winning form. His turn of pace and hardness in a tackle were key for the Zebras in a resounding 3 zip win.

Jack Turner – Kingborough Lions

Turner backed up his Round 1 form with a workhorse performance in midfield for the Lions. His big body was telling against a young and slender Knights group and he put in a tireless effort, laying many tackles and combining nicely with Dean Watkins at every opportunity.

Dean Watkins – Kingborough Lions

Dean Watkins is the second of two Lions to roar into the team of the week midfield this week. Watkins has relished a move into attacking midfield and was the standout player in Kingborough’s win over Glenorchy. He was simply excellent all game, his aggressive running and willingness to take players on was a delight to watch. He also finished his first half chance with aplomb and deserved his goal.

Chris Hunt – South Hobart

Not native to midfield but Chris ‘Wrecking Ball’ Hunt sits there for the Round 2 Team of the Week.

Played mainly as a tucked in left winger but roamed about fairly freely and was in the thick of the action in a dominant opening half for South Hobart where they more or less sewed up the result. Orchestrated a lot of South’s attacking forays and buzzed around with energy in a busy match. Switched wider in the second half and provided South great width and then even switched to full back just to showcase his versatility.

FORWARDS

Adam Edwards – Northern Rangers

The Englishman really dragged the rest of his Rangers team with him to claw a point away from Mitsubishi Park after a lacklustre opening half. Was at the heart of everything good for the Rangers and whilst City had an all round team performance, Edwards was the stand out on the pitch in a cagey 2-2 draw.

Brayden Mann – South Hobart

BRAYD

MITSUBISHI MOTORS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Mann took out this week’s public vote for Mitsubishi Motors Player of the Week, with a whopping 18.14% more vote than his closest rival, Dean Watkins.

Mann had a tremendous homecoming to his former stomping ground, destroying the Devonport defence with three goals and two assists. Opened his account in the opening minute of the match and didn’t let up on Devonport until the final whistle sounded.

Ethan Engels – Hobart Jeep Zebras

A matchwinning hattrick for Engels sees him into this week’s Team of the Week. Is a striker on the rise and is always good for at least a goal a game, with amazing instincts around goal and he certainly showcased these to tear apart Olympia. Was clinical and made the most of his chances, struck all three goals to sink the Warriors.
