Warriors Cruise Past Lions

The Olympia FC Warriors got back on the winners list as they comfortably accounted for the Kingborough Lions 3-0 on Saturday night at Warrior Park. After a scoreless first half, the Warriors dominance was finally rewarded in the second half with Jakub Sklenar scoring a brace and Jack Callan adding on a third as they coasted to a comfortable three points in a match they controlled and would have wrapped up sooner if not for the heroics of Shek Kamara.

It was a fairly cagey opening 15 minutes with Kingborough dropping deep and making themselves hard to break down. Lucas Hill thought he had opened the scoring when his header from an inch perfect Mccarthy cross was denied by a tremendous piece of goalkeeping from Kamara, who reacted sharply to get down and somehow keep it out.

The game fell into a pretty familiar pattern of Olympia controlling the ball but struggling to create clear goal scoring chances. Far too often when they did create an opening their end product was good enough, with their shots consistently flying straight at Kamara. After the early Hill chance he was incredibly busy throughout the first half but despite making 4-5 more saves, but for the most part they were all fairly regulation stops.

It was a frustrating 45 minutes for Lucas Hill when he saw another headed effort denied, this time by Phil McEldowney who made a brilliant goal line stop, jumping up to head the ball away and the game headed into the sheds locked at 0-0.

The second half played out in a similar manner with Olympia well on top and again Hill’s frustrating evening continued when he jinked past two defenders before blasting a fizzing shot just over the bar.

Thomas Bellini then should have broken the deadlock when the impressive Joffrey N’koso sent in a brilliant cross that took the centre backs out of the equation, but his shot was wide. N’Koso showed plenty to suggest the Warriors have a real player on their hands throughout the game and his drive down the right created a number of openings throughout the game.

He played a role as the Warriors finally broke the deadlock, spinning into the box and helping the ball on it’s way to Jakub Sklenar who promptly blasted the ball home.

It was N’koso’s ball to Bellini in the box brought about a second goal too as Bellini hit it back towards the middle of the box where Jack Callan had bombed on and he finished like a seasoned striker, stroking it first time into the back of the net.

They weren’t done yet with Sklenar adding a third for good measure just before full time, after Lucas Hill put one on a platter for him with a curling cross from the right touchline that left the Czech striker with the simplest of tap ins. It saw the game ending 3-0 and the Warriors comfortable victors as they looked to build form ahead of their FFA Cup game on August 1.
