Strikers Survive Lions Scare

The Devonport Strikers survived a scare, to come from a goal down to defeat the Kingborough Lions 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Strikers went down to a Danny Cowen penalty midway through the second half before a brace from Brayden Mann, and goal from Michael Holden, pulled them out of the fire. The result ensures that Devonport will remain on top after 14 rounds of the season.

After a scoreless first half, though not through a lack of trying from either side, it was the Lions who stunned Valley Road when they took the lead in the 56th minutes.

Nathan Pitchford brought down the lively Tim Baker in the box leaving the referee with no hesitation to point to the spot. Up stepped Danny Cowen, who has shown himself to be somewhat of a spot-kick specialist this year, and once again he made no mistake, emphatically driving home.

The sense of urgency was rising but as it so often has been in 2018, it was cometh the hour, cometh the Mann!

The star Striker found himself all alone at the back post from a deflected cross and he was clinical as ever in slotting the ball into the back of the net.

Michael Holden then stepped up and calmed the Strikers nerves as he pounced on an error at the back, running in slamming it home.

At that point, it seemed like the dam wall had finally burst and the Lions race was run, they had come close, but not quite pulled off what would have been a major boil over,

The result was then iced in the final minute of regulation as a back-heel from new man Adriano Jelenovic teed up the irrepressible Mann, for his second. It saw the game ending 3-1 in the Strikers favour and despite the scare, they remain on course for the league title.
