Warriors Cruise Past Rangers

The Olympia FC Warriors made it three wins in a row with a comfortable 3-0 win over Northern Rangers at Warrior Park. Canadian Gavin Hoy was at his brilliant best as the Warriors lead from early on in the contest and the three points never looked in doubt.

The first chance of the game fell Rangers way but Jorge Palacio blazed wide from 18 yards after getting in behind the Warriors lines.

The Warriors then went ahead  just 11 minutes into the game when captain Jake Vandermey chipped a ball over the Rangers back four to find Hoy who had cut in from the right. The Canadian made no mistake, placing his effort neatly into the bottom left corner.  He nearly doubled the advantage moments later but he lashed his volley straight at Luigi Cordova who denied him.

It was the assistant referee who would next thwart them, Graham Glynn having a goal disallowed for offside as the Warriors bossed the early contest.

Warren Wadawu was having a good day, making defenders miss and he would set up Olympia's second after cutting the ball back to Nick Meredith who took advantage of a rare start to get on the score sheet, firing home from 10 yards out to make it 2-0.

It could have been more than that at half time such was the Warriors control of the game, they were  given far too much time and space on the ball and kept the ball in Rangers’ half for long periods of time.

The second half followed a similar script. Olympia were doing all of the attacking and they extended their lead with a third goal mid way through the half. Substitute Thomas Bellini staked his claims for a starting berth with a well taken finish after he reacted first to a loose ball in the box.

There was no further scoring but it was all one way traffic as Olympia continued to have the best of the scoring chances.

Hoy was again a stand out on the right, with him involved in most of Warriors quality attempts on Rangers’ goal whilst Wadawu was his usual lively self on the left.  Vandermey was rock solid at the back, and Hickey played his role well. There were also some good performances from goalscorers Bellini and Meredith, with Mearns linking up well with his wide men all afternoon delivering top balls into dangerous positions. For Rangers, Doherty looked lively but apart from that and some glimpses from Thannhauser there wasn’t much danger from Rangers.

Olympia Captain Jake Vandermey was pleased with his sides performance and he praised the performances of his wide men, Hoy and Wadawu.

"We came with a game plan, to knock the ball around and play our brand of football and I think we did that effectively today."

"It's been our focus at training in recent weeks, to press as a team, and try to win the ball back in the final third and I think that definitely helped us today."

"They're both very good players and it's really good to have them,  you want to be playing with them not against them because they are both quality."

Rangers Coach Des Baker said he hoped they would continue to build but wasn't too disappointed with his players showing.

"We're a good group, they've been training well and we are developing their game going forwards."

"I wouldn't say it was a poor performance, when you don't take your chances, you can go behind very quickly against a good team."

"Alex Fulton was very good and Jorge was one of our main front runners."
