BACK-STORY.
According to their Constitution, Kiribat AA must hold an Annual General Meeting "some time in March each year". Kiribati, together with the rest of the Pacific, was threatened - but not infected - by the Coronavirus Covid-19 as it spread from China in January and February. The resulting lockdown meant that no meeting could be held at the prescribed time this year. As lockdown began to ease in May, a date at the end of June was published in the press. A number of members of the Kiribati Olympic Committee (KNOC) were invited to attend as Observers. Unavoidably a number of members of the in-post KAA Executive Board (EB) could not attend and so it was agreed to postpone the meeting. It was held on Saturday, July 4th. A motion was proposed of "no confidence in the Secretary" and this was passed. Among other agenda items, a verbal Financial Report was made by the Treasurer; and a number of new members were elected to the EB. Ex-Minister and previous KAA President, Mr. David Collins, was elected for the (usual period) next two years.
Unfortunately the deposed Secretary, Nei Kairao Tune, has disputed the legality of the voting and this discussion continues. Nevertheless the first minuted Meeting of the new EB was held on July 6th. with a number of encouraging resolutions passed, including reference to a new office and secure storage area.
One of the existing EB, the Athletes' Representative Mr. Buraieta Yeeting, has agreed to help with the editing of this site. An image of his performance and podium success is attached !
Update 10/11/2020. As no resolution appeared to possible in-country, even with the good offices of the KNOC, the matter had been referred to the Oceania Athletics Association (OAA) and thence to World Athletics (W.A.) So KAA, its athletes and coaches, are currently in a form of limbo. We (and they) await the outcome.
