The ladder has settled after Round 16 in the Peter Jackson VFL, with all byes complete and each team with four games remaining for season 2014.
The positions in the top four changed again this weekend, with Williamstown moving ahead of Werribee, and Box Hill Hawks moving to second spot as it hots up in the battle for the second chance.
Let’s take a look at the three games that finished Round 16 today:
Winning ways continue for Seagulls
Williamstown has continued its winning form from the FOXTEL Cup Grand Final with a 61-point win over Bendigo.
The tall timber up forward for the Seagulls proved the difference, with Ben Casley and Scott Clouston combining up forward for nine of the home sides’ 21 goals for the game.
Despite trailing at every chance, Bendigo showed a spirited fight back in the third term to ensure the Seagulls did not kick away with the game as Tyrone Downie led the way up forward for them with four goals.
However Williamstown showed no tired legs from two games in six days to restrict the Gold to just one goal in the final term while adding five of their own to run out 10-goal winners.
Casley (5 goals) and Clouston (4) were part of six multiple goal scorers for Williamstown, with Sean Tighe (3 goals), Sean Hetherington and Willie Wheeler in his return from injury among the best.
For the Gold, Sam Heaveyside, Matt Farrelly and Jake Aart were among the best.
Three in a row for Dolphins
Frankston has won three on the trot, with a come from behind win against Collingwood. Trailing by 18 points at three quarter time, Frankston doubled its goal tally with six final term majors, keeping Collingwood goalless to win by 17 points.
After an even first half which saw Frankston turn a 12-point deficit into a seven point half time lead, the Magpies took control of the game with a four goal to nil third term.
But as they had the previous round against Casey Scorpions, Frankston saved its best football till the final term to race home and deny the Magpies a chance to move within a game of the top four, and two games ahead of the team below them trying to enter the eight.
Tim Harper kicked three for the winners, along with Scott Simpson and Michael Lourey with two each.
Nic Newman continued his good form for the Dolphins to be among the best, along with Russ Gabirel in the ruck, Jordan Pollard, Shane Hockey and Josh Tynan.
Brodie Grundy was the only multiple goal kicker for the Magpies, with Sam Dwyer, Jack Hellier and 23rd player Callum Matheson among the best.
Hawks fade but still claim win.
Box Hill Hawks jumped back within a game and a half of top placed Port Melbourne with a 22-point win over Coburg. The win pushed the Hawks into second spot but the final term fade out late cost them a bigger result.
David Hale was the key early for Box Hill with three first quarter goals, to help the home side to an 18-point quarter time lead. The Hawks set up their win in the second term with three goals to one, but the inaccuracy of the home side meant at have time they only had eight goals to show from 20 scoring attempts.
Box Hill led by as much as 56 points midway through the third term, before Coburg kicked three of the last four goals of the term to trail by 44 points at three quarter time.
Despite the Hawks looking home early in the final quarter, Coburg stormed back to get within 16 points, before Box Hill settle to record their 10th win of the season.
Hale led the way with five goals, with Liam Tobin, Ben Ross and Jordan Kelly with two each. Kyle Cheney dominated off half back to be among the best, along with Hale, Marc Lock in the middle and Ben Ross.
Coburg captain Nick Carnell (19 disposals) was the best for the :Lions in his 150th game, along with Nathan Blair, Ben Clifton and Dan Younan who helped lead the Coburg revival. Younan finished with 4 goals, with Carnell, Dan Venditti and Zak Saad kicking two each.
