CHS: Students First, Athletes Second

Recently the Chuuk High School administration held a meeting with the men's and women's basketball teams, and certain rules were explained and policies clarified.

The administration informed the students that they were students first and basketball players second. In order for a student to play basketball he or she cannot miss any classes on game days. Players are required to get the signatures of their teachers and turn the document into the office at the end of school.

Any student/player failing to submit a signed statement with all the teachers' signatures will not be able to play. Should a player violate this rule, the player will be suspended. If a student plays in a game and it is learned that the player failed to get all signatures, the game will be forfeited.

Most of the girls on the Chuuk High School basketball team are in the Upward Bound program. This program requires that the students maintain a high GPA. The director of Upward Bound agreed to let the girls miss classes to play their games, but they were made to understand that there could be no drop in their GPAs.

Requiring students to perform academically and work hard is an important part of their development. CHS players are students first. Congratulations to CHS for caring about their student/athletes... and good luck to the teams.
