NCDABA Claim Men's & Women's National Honours

The National Capital District Amateur Basketball Association (NCDABA) had two reasons to celebrate on Saturday night, after both of their teams took out the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea Under 18 men’s and women’s national championship crowns.

The NCDABA women’s team won their decider over Port Moresby Women’s Basketball League (POMWBL) 63 to 38, while the NCDABA men overcame PMBL #1, 70 to 65.

In the women’s clash NCDABA captain Evia Kake lead all game scorers with 18-points, while her teammate Jennifer Haro added 15.  For POMWBL Siettana Arthur finished with 13-points.

The men’s matchup went down to the wire, with teams trading baskets throughout the exhilarating contest.

15-year old young-gun Corni Muri was a standout for NCDABA, totaling a team high 19-points in an impressive display.  He was well supported by Moses Kairi who chipped in with 14-points of his own.

For the PMBL, lightening quick guard Douglas Pirika was the star of the game, however his 36-point haul was not enough to get his team over the line.

In the playoff for third placing’s, the Mt Hagen women went home with the silverware after beating Kerema 67-51, while the Daru men’s team took home bronze with an impressive 79-67 victory over Kupiano.

BFPNG Executive Officer and Tournament Director Joel Khalu said the championships exceeded all expectations.

“Being the first Under 18 National Championships that BFPNG have held in a very long time, going in we weren’t really sure how good the level of competition was going to be,” Mr. Khalu said.

“Over the four-days we saw that the standard was high-quality in both the men’s and women’s divisions and people walked away from the event wanting to see more.”

“The men’s championship game was particularly fun for spectators to watch, especially when it really could have gone either way.”

“Overall it just shows the amazing basketball talent that we have throughout Papua New Guinea and following the success of this tournament, the Federation is excited about its plans to host both Under 17 & Under 15 National Championships in 2017,” Khalu added.
