Commemorating International Day of Sport Development and Peace

Port Moresby (PAPUA NEW GUINEA) –

Basketball for Good was presented to mark this year's International Day of Sports Development and Peace (IDSDP), which will take place on April 6, 2023, with the theme: Scoring for People and Planet.

The event's goal was to foster friendship while using athletics to promote social inclusion and gender equality.

With the support of our national 5x5 mens and womens teams, we hosted a successful event which included an introduction to basketball, basketball terminology, fundamental basketball movement, and a basketball game to round off the day.

“Sport for development promotes social development by fostering individual growth, community improvement, and national dispute resolution, as well as advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, encouraging peace, and human rights” This was shared by the Female engagement officer, Ms. Del Koime.

100 participants from chosen schools, aged 6 to 16, as well as people with disabilities, experienced basketball in a fun and safe environment.

Del, who recently joined the Federation, added, "I'm super excited to introduce basketball to this crown, especially to the 43 girls who participated."

Basketballs Hoops for Health program, celebrated the day together with six other sports for development programs, namely, Footballs Just play, Hockey’s HookIn4Health, GymBad inclusive, One Netball under the PNG Netball Federation, PNG NRLs League bilo laip program and Kicks for Kokoda, through funding support from Team Up, under the Australian Governments sports for development program.
