KFL Basketball Championship 2013

The opening ceremony commences on Saturday 1st June in Bairiki Basketball court.  According to the main programme that day, guest arrived at 0930am and seated and afterward 10am all registered teams both men and women were marching from the maneaba all the way to the court.  Welcome remarks from the President of Kiribati Basketball and follow up by the shoot out competition (3 points and center).  All competitors for shoot out were payed 3.00 for 3pt and 5.00 for center.  The best shooter from last year was defeated by the new shooter from Korobu club who were just involve in this year competition.

Teams registered

There were 11 teams for open men, 12 junior boys teams (U20) and 6 teams for open women.  According to the game format the round robin has been used for both open men and junior boys.  The normal competition was used for women.  All competition schedules has been generated in FIBA Organizer program and uploaded daily onto website to display results to all members.

Venue

The main venue for the competition where located in Bairiki and Betio Basketball court.  All teams were being adhere to get in places according to allocation of game venues and timing.

Genenrally, in the week days matches start at 5pm to 6pm for both men (Tues&Thurs), junior boys play every Monday, Wed and Friday.  A combine matches ran every Saturday from morning till afternoon.  Both game venues split in week days with allocated officials who were appointed to manage the games for Bairiki and Betio court.

Playoffs

According to a game finals format, a top 4 teams finals from pool A and B has been set with FIBA Organizer for the playoffs for both open men, junior boys and women.  All teams for both men and junior boys playing cross pool in the first playoff(quarter finals) to find the best top 4 to compete in the Semis.  In the Semi finals for open men pool B teams defeated all the other pools.  For junior boys, two teams from the other pools defeated.  For women teams they were competed in the semi finals to the grand finals.

Grand finals

After the national opening ceremony conducted in the Bairiki Reuben K Uatio Stadium, all grand finals kicks off at 2pm.  All Teams finalist were arrived at 1pm and from there junior boys were first to go Flyers and Bik Dreams 2 boys who were playing accressive and tight score.  In the final score Flyers won with 10 point difference from Bik Dreams teams (70, 54). For open men, Buota were the new team who defeated the number team from Betio during the quarter finals, then semi and now compete with the champion team who always won.  Two players from Buota team known as Wepie and Dallas has been involve and encourage the community of Buota villages. These teams playing tght from the first, second quarter.  In the third quarter Buota team lead with 4 point onto the othe team.  Until then, in the last 6 minute of fourth quarter strongest players from Buota has foul out. Finally, Bik Dreams teams won again in the 34th Kiribati Anniversary for this year.  For women team, TUBA Ladies and Shark Bait were compete in the finals with a tight score of 68, 60.  Last year these women teams were competed in the finals and now this year they compete again.

Kiribati Fish Limited is the major partner in the competition.  This is the first year KFL sponsored the Kiribati Basketball competition and proudly contribute the amount of 3,000 cash to cover the prizes, promotion stuff and together with officials allowances.  Through promotion by KBF would be highly supporting the sponsor in displaying banners, advertisement and so forth.  Thanks again KFL and hope we will join again in further basketball activities in future.
