EXPECTATIONS OF PLAYERS

Welcome to the Casey Basketball Association 2017/2018 Representative try-outs for the Casey Cavaliers. Try-outs are an exciting and sometimes stressful time for players, parents and coaches. In light of this, we would like to share a few helpful hints and tips of what to expect during the try-outs.

1. NERVOUS EXCITEMENT

Throughout the try-outs sessions, you will see a lot of faces - players, parents, coaches, family members. We are all here for the same reason. As a player (and parent), don’t be worried if you feel a little nervous. That is to be expected. But, try and control those nerves and take pride in the fact that you have succeeded in making it through to the try-outs. We want you to be excited about the prospect of playing next season as a Junior Cavalier.

2. ARRIVE EARLY

Ensure you arrive at least half an hour before your try-out is due to start. This will give you enough time to sign up and have your player number written on your leg. The coaches will use this number to identify you during the try-out period.

3. BE ORGANISED

Please bring both a light and dark singlet (reversible singlets are perfect), a basketball and a drink bottle. Ensure that your name is written on all of your items.

4. FEEDBACK - LISTENING TO IMPROVE

Sometimes this is the toughest part of being a player. Listening to coaches when they tell you things that they’d like you to do differently can be hard, and it isn’t always what a player wants to hear. But, how you respond to feedback is a really important part of becoming a successful representative player. Be ready to listen to what your coaches tell you, and try hard to always improve.

5. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS

The coaches will be running you though a few drills and watching you while you play during try-outs. Listen closely to their instructions, but if you aren’t sure of anything, don't be afraid to ask questions.

6. ATTITUDE

Having a good attitude is a factor that coaches take seriously. It is important that you show respect towards yourself, your coaches, referees and fellow players as we are observing how well you will represent our club as a Junior Cavalier both on and off the court.

7. BE READY TO TRY YOUR HARDEST

Players have to earn the privilege to play representative basketball, and it is challenging. We encourage all players to give it everything you’ve got and compete for every minute of each session. Prepare ahead of time to be the best player you can be every single session.

8. HAVE FUN!

Even though sport is competitive - especially elite sport, such as representative basketball - we want you to walk away having enjoyed the experience. The competition may be tough, but you are being coached by some of Casey Basketball’s (and Victoria’s) top coaches, and playing against some of the best athletes in the area. This experience will help you learn and get better as a player, regardless of the end outcome. Not everyone makes it this far in the try-out process, so feel proud of yourself for being here and go out and continue to try your hardest and learn along the way.

EXPECTATIONS OF PARENTS

1. LET THE PLAYERS PLAY

Everyone involved from Casey Basketball during try-outs is aware that try-outs are stressful. Most of us are parents ourselves and we know what it’s like trying to harness the nerves and excitement that our children feel going through this process. As a parent, our biggest tip is to let the players play and concentrate on the voices and instructions of the coaches during each session. We are all here to try and give each player the best chance of doing their best. With your support both on and off the court, we can do this more effectively.

Try-outs held in October are considered ‘closed’ try-outs. This means, only players, coaches and officials are allowed in the court area. Parents are required to register their children 30 minutes prior to the tryout time, and are able to wait in the café area until the try-outs are complete for that session.

2. LET THE COACHES COACH

We are aware that many coaches are familiar faces (and friends) for players and parents. However, during try-outs perceptions can be misleading. To avoid any misunderstandings amongst anyone, please do not approach the coaches on or off the court during try-out sessions.

Instead, if you have any questions or queries please speak with:

- Jodie Krug (Development Manager)

- Daniel Phillips (Girls Program Coordinator)

- Greg Nicholls (Boys Program Coordinator)

They will be more than happy to answer any questions or queries you may have.

Thank you for choosing Casey Cavaliers as your club for the 2017/2018 season!

Good luck to all the players and coaches involved.

#FearTheCavalier

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
