Message from Executive Officer

Congratulations to all the players who participated in the Challenge season for 2017.  Finals week was a fitting reminder to me of why we are involved in this sport.  It was fantastic to see the improvements in players and the sportsmanship showed.  There is a marked improvement in refereeing and we are all certainly taking a step forward.  I am certainly looking forward to the upcoming Championship season and this newsletter has a lot of information regarding the season and events ahead - so grab a coffee and read on!

BOYS JUNIOR LEAGUE (23 AND UNDER)

The New Junior League competition will provide a platform for those players who are 23 and under lost to basketball when they became too old to play Under 18s and who did not wish to play seniors, as well as providing an opportunity for younger League participants to play a second weekly game who are too old for Under 18's allowing an opportunity for these younger League players to mentor and work with up and coming Juniors, setting a platform for the future.

This competition will be handled as seriously as the current League competition by the DBA in the fact that League level officials will be provided and all games will be fully timed games on either court 1 or 2 with hopefully the provision of full LiveStats.

From a development point of view this level of competition provides players, coaches and other officials with the opportunity to compete competitively with those closer in age, outside of the League competition with more opportunity for game improvement and development.

Players are encouraged to think back to their team mates and/or friends, role models who “just stopped playing” when they reached the end of their final season of Under 18s and didn’t progress to sit the bench for League teams and who were unable to commit to senior’s nights. We encourage clubs to take this opportunity on board and look to get in contact with past members to bring back a 3-4-year gap of players, then basketball as a whole benefits and the standards improve.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact your club to see if they have registered a team!!

GIRLS UNDER 21 COMPETITION

DBA is hoping to attract and retain girls in Basketball.  By raising the current Under 18's girls competition to Under 21's, we are aiming to hold on to female participation within basketball. The increase of 3 years also targets players who were too old for Under 18's and have not progressed to seniors or League after discontinuing their participation in the last 2 years. By lengthening the age bracket we are able to further compete with other sports when it comes to female participation in the hope to further female basketball as a whole. This age bracket also includes those participating in League at a younger age in order to strengthen a junior girls competition as opposed to the Under 18's of the Challenge Season.
With an increase in the age bracket of this competition we hope to see an increase in participation which will inevitably lead to the resurrection of both Division 1 and 2 levels of competition within this lost age bracket. The increase in age, also allows some of the older Boarders from Kormilda and St Johns to join or stay playing.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact your club to see if they have registered a team!!

SNEAK PREVIEW OF COURTS 1 AND 2
As some of you will have seen, Courts 1 and 2 are being stripped, resanded and re line marked for our upcoming Championship season.  The courts will both be correct sizes with great lighting and temperature controls (fans and air conditioners).  Seating for players and score table officials will be moved to the far side of Court 2 and grand stand side of Crt 1 to enable more seating to be placed down the Centre of the courts (facing Crt 2 but able to be turned to Crt 1 for major events).  The seating aspect is in the next stage of refurbishment, so will not be available in July when the season commences.  Spectators will have access to some plastic chairs but may have to bring their own fold outs for the first few weeks.  I understand this will be met with some complaints but in the grand scheme of things it is a small price to pay for future comfort and increased seating. I am confident the players will be thrilled with the end results.  Expected completion of Courts 1 and 2 is 20th July.  Will keep you updated :-)

SPECTRUM STADIUM REVAMP
Yesterday was the end of an era, when the grandstand from Crt 3 (the old Main Court) was removed.  The grand stand had to be taken down in order for the courts to be extended to the Official FIBA size (they are currently 2m too short and too narrow).  This will mean that DBA will have 5 FIBA size courts!!  Great news for all teams especially those who play on the back court - maybe not so good news for the 3 point specialists on the back courts!!  All of the old supports as well as the wooden backboards have also been removed.  Walls will be reclad this week, repainted (yes the yellow is going) and holes repaired. Monday the new supports, glass backboards and snapback rings will be started. We will then commence laying the new surface, which will be very nice!!  The courts will then be re linemarked.  Estimate completion date is 24th July, but again this may change.  We will be taking out the current score tables and all seating, with new ones also forming part of our next stage of redevelopment.  Unfortunately with all good things, come some bad, meaning there will be less room around the courts.  We will be looking at seating options but again the first few weeks may be BYO seats!!  Please remember that all renovations are being done in the best interests of the game and player development.  Whilst we love our spectators and supporters sometimes we have to make small sacrifices.  However there will be plenty of room on the score table so we may get more volunteers wanting to score or do stats????  Stay tuned

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN LEARNING STATS?  ANYONE THAT LOVES THE GAME OF BASKETBALL IS CAPABLE OF CALLING OR INPUTTING STATS.  IT IS A FUN JOB AND DBA ARE LOOKING FOR INTERESTED PEOPLE TO TRY AND ASSIST US IN RUNNING STATS FOR LEAGUE MEN AND WOMEN AND JUNIOR LEAGUE GAMES.  IF YOU ARE INTERESTED PLEASE EMAIL executive@darwinbasketball.com.au

Darwin Basketball Association is excited to announce a "Double Header" game of National Wheelchair Basketball featuring Darwins own Tom O'Neill Thorne vs CJ McCarthy-Grogan and Darren Skuse. These players will be playing in opposing team. This is a wonderful opportunity for Territorians to see some action packed skills in a game that we are fortunate to have access to.  The teams will be doing a variety of skills training, public signings, come and try days!!  A curtain raiser to the Friday night game will be the 2016 League Men Championship season finalists - Ansett V Palmerston facing off in the wheelchairs!  Bar and canteen will be open with lots of fun and activities!  This will be the first game on the new courts so make sure you are available!!  More information to follow!
Darwin Basketball Association will be hosting a game against the USA Marines on Saturday 29th July at 2pm.  DBA will be looking for nominations from each of the League teams (2 players) to make a DBA team for this event.  More information to follow.
