Two AFL premiership winning superstars will be in Armidale early next week to pass on their knowledge of the game to the region’s youngsters.
TOP OF HIS GAME: Armidale bound Heath Grundy has played 149 games for the Sydney Swans.
Sydney Swans stars Heath Grundy and Alex Johnson are coming to Armidale as part of the annual Australia Post Community Camp.
The camp sees elite AFL clubs and players go out into the community to engage with locals and in particular AFL players, highlighting the pathway from the grassroots level to the AFL.
Grundy and Johnson will conduct sessions on skills, running drills and game play.
The camp will be held at the University of New England’s Bellevue Oval, which is also the home ground of Armidale powerhouse AFL club the New England Nomads, on Monday from 4pm to 5.30pm and is open to all players aged between five and 12.
“Anyone contemplating playing the game, boys and girls are encouraged to come down and meet the Swans,” Northern NSW AFL development coordinator Matthew Crawley said.
“It doesn’t matter if you’ve never held a football before, all abilities are welcome to what should be a great event, with two premiership stars.”
The two Swans players will be available to sign autographs and answer questions after the camp.
Grundy is a veteran of 149 games for the Swans and is widely renowned as one of the most reliable defenders in the AFL.
Johnson has been limited to just 45 games for the Swans due to injury, but has long been considered a supremely talented defender with a huge future in the game.
Both players were part of the Swans’ 2012 premiership winning side.
