After being the first team in town to start their pre-season training back in January, the Narrabri Eagles will finally get to stretch their wings this Saturday, when they take on Gunnedah Bulldogs at Worsley Oval.
The Eagles, who had the bye first up in the Tamworth AFL (TAFL) last week, have undertaken a strenuous pre-season.
The club will be hoping that having the three-month long fitness regime which included a exercise camp up Mt Kaputar should have players fit and firing for another year.
That starts with a trip to Gunnedah where the Eagles are set to reignite their traditional rivalry with the Bulldogs and hopefully write another successful chapter between the two sides.
“We see it as our local derby,” Eagles’ Daniel Hughes said this week.
“It’s always a good battle with them (Gunnedah) and I reckon we could see another close one again,” Hughes added.
Despite never losing a match to the Bulldogs last year, Eagles opponents look set to be up for it, after a 48-point win against Tamworth Swans last weekend.
Although Eagles were rested there was plenty of interesting talking points to come out of the first round of the TAFL.
Tamworth Kangaroos upset defending champs, New England Nomads, 116-60.
Moree Suns had a debut they would want to forget, putting just 17 points on the board to Inverell Saints 229.
Focusing on the local side for 2015, the Eagles have made several changes with Michael Levan and Matt McConnell will lead the team new joint co-captains for 2015.
Hughes take a step back, slotting into a senior leadership group of Jesse Dixon, Luke McDermott and Matt Walters.
Player-coach Todd Dunn has kept a relatively quiet profile in the lead up to the first clash but is expected to again lead the side from the front.
Last year Dunn was the second highest goal-scorer in the TAFL comp.
Big things are expected from some of the side’s newest faces to the team with Jake Fenner, Tom Denyer and Andrew Weymer all receiving high praise from the club.
Last week the Eagles took to the greens at Narrabri Bowling Club on Sunday for their official launch for the season ahead.
Players, members and supporters enjoyed an afternoon of barefoot bowls.
