The Sapphire Coast AFL Lightning Premiership is set to strike Eden this Sunday the 29th of March from 9:30am. The seven Sapphire Coast AFL senior teams will be joined by East Gippsland Football and Netball League’s Orbost Snowy Rovers FC as well as division one AFL Canberra club, Gunghalin Jets FC.
‘The addition of both Orbost and Gunghalin to this years lightning premiership is extremely exiting for the competition with clubs being able to measure themselves against a really good opponent. It also shows that our local competition is gaining interest within NSW and also across the boarder to East Gippsland’ Football Operations Coordinator Jarrod Moore noted.
With the lightning premiership being most teams first hit out for the season, players will be ready for the first bounce with teams playing in a modified AFL 9’s format.
‘The 9’s format allows for clubs to have a great pre-season run with the matches being of a fast pace with plenty of action occurring throughout the day which is fantastic viewing for the spectators in attendance’ Moore said.
2014’s Lightning premiership was one to remember with the Pambula Panthers defeating the Bermagui Breakers on the final siren. With the Panthers doing the double last year winning the lightning and regular season premierships Moore believes that the other Sapphire Coast AFL teams will be out to beat the Panthers in 2015.
‘With Pambula going undefeated last year in the pre-season and regular season the other six SCAFL teams will be out to break their streak not only in the regular season but also on Sunday. With Orbost and Gunghalin also present their aim to go back to back may be a little tougher with some quality opposition internally and externally attending this year competition’.
Action for Sunday’s lightning premiership at the Eden Football Ground kicks off at 9:30am. The day is free entry with matches occurring throughout the day concluding with a grand final to be played at 3:20pm between the two form sides of the day. Full canteen services will be available on the day thanks to the Eden Whalers FC.
‘The Whalers have been great with their organisation of the lightning premiership and the day is shaping to be a fantastic day with clubs bringing marquees to create a carnival like atmosphere. We look forward to some great football on the day and most importantly getting back into action for 2015’ Moore concluded.
