SCHOOL pupils from throughout the Valley participated in the Paul Kelly Cup AFL gala day at the Bega Showground last Thursday.
Taking part in this year's cup were Bega Valley, Bermagui, Quaama and Cobargo Public Schools, Sapphire Coast Anglican College and Mumbulla School.
The schools progressing to the South Coast final at Batemans Bay on July 17 from Thursday's gala day are Bermagui Public School in the boys pool, Bega Valley Public School in the girls pool and Cobargo in the mixed.
The event, hosted by the Bega Bombers AFL Club, not only promotes AFL in general, it also encourages participation in AFL at a local level amongst junior members of the community.
The ground was a hive of activity with teams divided into three groups - boys, girls and mixed.
Organised by the NSW/ACT AFL the annual competition consists of 12 per side playing modifed rules.
The successful teams in the boys and girls group of the South Coast final then play in the state final at the SCG on July 29, while the winners of the mixed division at Batemans Bay are named South Coast champions.
AFL regional coordinator for South Coast, John Dyball, was pleased with the efforts made by the children and schools participating.
“It is nice to have Mumbulla School here for the first time,” Mr Dyball said
“It's good to have them involved in the gala day, as it is with all the schools that participate.”
All teams played three games with a final at the end to decide who goes in to the next round.
Bega Valley were victorious in the Girls, Bermagui in the Boys and Cobargo in the Mixed.
