Reggies' minor premiership won in sweet and sour weekend

It was a bittersweet moment for the Mudgee Dragons’ first division side when they lost to Blackheath Blackcats at Glen Willow Sporting Complex yesterday.

The first division side wrapped up the minor premiership in Oberon on Saturday but failed to back up in a 25-16 loss on Sunday.

A hat-trick of tries and a field goal to Blackheath halfback Jessie Lua Lua sealed the game for the visitors.

Heading into Sunday’s game Blackheath needed a win to have a chance of finishing the Group 10 regular season in third and they showed a resounding commitment to do so.

The Blackcats shot out to an 18-0 lead by half time including a double to Lua Lua. Blackheath were down to 12 men early after hooker Hugh McLisky was sin-binned.

The visitors’ crafty halfback continued his good form by scoring early in the second half to create a commanding 24-0 lead as Mudgee looked lacklustre.

However Dragons prop David Jessiman got the side back into the contest with some strong running and crossing for two tries of his own.

By the time he scored his last try to make it 24-16 the game was all but over and Lua Lua put the finishing touches on a comprehensive peformance by kicking a field goal with less than minute to go.

Mudgee Dragons’ first division coach Shane Weatherley said Sunday’s loss was disappointing but did not cause too many concerns.

“It was a miserable, snowy day over at Oberon yesterday but the boys went over and played well because we wanted to seal the minor premiership. We did that,” he said.

“Things didn’t go our way today. It really was tough conditions in Oberon yesterday and I knew a few of the guys were a bit worse for wear.

“But full credit to Blackheath they played well. It’s a bit disappointing to finish off the rounds that way. We wanted to do it with a high and we came back in the end there but it you have to play for the full 70 minutes of football and not leave your best for 20 [minutes].

“But we won the minor premiership and have the week off so we’ll address a few problems and we’ll be all ready for our first semi-final and winning the premiership, that’s our goal.”

BLACKHEATH BLACKCATS 25 (Antonio Ale, Jessie Lua Lua 3 tries; Shannon Rhodes 4 goals; Lua Lua field goal) def. MUDGEE DRAGONS 16 (David Jessiman 2, Pete McDonnell tries; Brad James 2 goals)
