Finishing seventh last year, Port Melbourne Colts President Ben Brown explains how his club has been training hard over the pre-season to ensure the Colts return to the forefront of the Division One competition.
Number of teams this year:
Two men’s teams (senior and reserves) as well as a women’s team in the VWFL.
Pre-season News:
Pre-season has been very positive with great numbers consistently hitting the track. The coaching and playing groups have come together really well and we are moving in the right direction across all areas of the club. The focus now is Round 1 at home, and we would like to put the call out to our past players and loyal supporters to get along and be a part of season 2014!
Recruitment across the board has been good. We have managed to fill the spots of the small handful of players that departed the club at the end of 2013, as well as signed some good young blokes, who along with the core of last year’s group will drive the club into the future.
Expectations for 2014:
Putting results aside, as a whole we are very focused on bring the Colts status and reputation back to where we believe it should and can be. We received a fair bit of criticism last year from a number of angles, some justified, however collectively we feel IT’S TIME we returned to the forefront of the WRFL.
Staff/coaching changes:
At the end of last year, we, like most reviewed all areas of the club and with that comes change. In terms of coaching we have seen changes at all levels. After a quite extension interview process the Club was delighted to appoint one of its favorite sons back to the club in Jason ‘Jack’ Love. Jack brings a wealth of experience, a great network and an approach that is being well received by all. He will be well supported through the Reserves with Mick Hill being appointed. Like Jack, Mick has had a long history in coaching with a number of flags on the resume that will be fundamental in continuing the development of our group.
Who is the captain(s) this year?
Blake Twomey has again been appointed Captain for 2014. Blake is one of our true leaders and consistently delivers game day as well as being a key driver of our culture and brand. Blake will be supported this year by Brad Sutcliffe, who is well respected for the way he goes about it game day often without the fan fair it probably deserves and Justin Taylor, who only after being with the club for 1 year has already cemented himself as a one of the leaders of our group and has been instrumental in bringing the group together in 2014.
