WESTERN Region Football League must start again in its quest to be crowned AFL Victoria Metropolitan champions, after being handed a 34-point defeat by Eastern Football League at Princes Park on Saturday.
The Doggies threatened in the opening term but failed to capitalise.
A well-drilled Eastern side wrestled back momentum in the second quarter to make the WRFL pay.
WRFL coach Brett Jacobs made changes at half-time, switching Jayden Post to centre-half-forward and moving Murray Boyd into defence.
The move helped but was not a matchwinner despite reigning Barry Priest medallist Matthew Dean lifting across half-back in the third term to create some smart passages of play.
Jack Purton-Smith dominated on the ball, assisted by Wayde Skipper’s delivery in the ruck, while Andrew Panayi’s sharpshooting kept his side in the game.
But EFL proved too strong in the end, prevailing 13.10 (88) to 8.6 (54), with Matthew Aver named best on ground for the victors.
