Day 2 - Girls A team split their two games

The Harbour A girls team started the second day of competition against Plamerston North. Coach Jodie Cameron was very vocal to start the game organising the defense. The girls were playing very clean defense keeping their hands out which has been a particular point of emphasis that refs have been calling this tournament.

The A teams passing and cutting got them great open looks to start the game. Jess Moors had a nervous start on defense but hit a nice layup to calm herself.

Harbour’s full court defense is causing huge problems for the Palmerston North ball handlers who are being hounded. The first quarter finished with Harbour ahead 14-12.

The second period started pretty tight. Harbour was able to get several shots to go before Palmerston North wanted a timeout.

The break let Harbour set up their pressure defense which forced multiple shot clock violations and steals. The A team got plenty of quality looks but their shooting percentage was terrible after missing a ton of easy shots.

Lucky for Harbour their defense pushed them ahead to 31-14 at half time. The second quarter defensive effort restricted Palmerston North to only two points in the period.

To start the third Harbour begins posting up Rashaan Smith which gets away from what got them ahead in the first place. Mareta Davidson got to the hoop for an easy two and followed with a steal and score a few possessions later.

Coach Cameron finished the quarter letting the refs know her distain for their performance so far this game. 47-21 entering the final period.

In the fourth the only problems facing Harbour were foul trouble as the reaching on defense, that had crept in since a strong defensive start, meant that many players had high personal foul counts.

The game ended slowly as freethrows were the dominant form of scoring for both teams. Final score 71-35 to the Harbour girls.

In the second game of the day the girls were beaten by a high quality Waikato team. The shell shocked team only had 10 points half way through the second quarter and couldn’t recover.
