Day 2 - B team girls continue strong pool play

The Harbour B girls began Day 2 of their nationals playing against the powerhouse ACM1 team. It was by no means a walk over as the score may show as the girls put up a hell of a fight eventually losing 92-59.

In their second game of the day the side faced a Wellington team still searching for their first victory of the tournament.

Emilia Shearer continued her strong nationals with the opening bucket for Harbour. The B team started in a positive fashion causing the Wellington coach to call time after only a minute and a half of play.

The girls then scored a fantastic layup beating the defense up the court with great strong passing and zero dirbbles. The momentum didn’t last long though and it soon started creeping towards Wellington’s side before Coach McCurran called for timeout.

This didn’t halt Harbour’s slide as the Wellington coaching unit screamed orders to their players on defense which helped them gain the first quarter 15-13 lead.

Harbour then came out and made several horrible turnovers to start the second. Shearer tried forcing the high post pass two possessions in a row both leading to steals for Wellington.

Shearer made up for this later in the quarter as she drew two key charges on Wellington drives to the bucket. Along with some solid scoring, she led the team to a 26-19 advantage at half time winning the 2nd period 13-4.

Harbour quickly extended the lead out to 30-19 and looked as though they would run away with the game. Tabitha Leyson stripped the ball of a Wellington player and went to score and Kristin Talma snatched the offensive rebound and put it back up for two.

The period finished with Wellington in the penalty and repeatedly sent the Harbour girls to the freethrow line. This in no way helped the B team as their poor freethrow shooting was put in the spot light.

Wellington were able to win the quarter and bring the lead back down to 40-35 with one quarter to play.

The final quarter started with a huge defense play from Talma, blocking a shot which saw Leyson grab the loose ball and score on the break.

After finally getting a rest in the third quarter Emilia Shearer checked back into the game with 5.35 left in the affair.

Her fresh legs were highly noticeable as she scored 8 points in the closing stages to take the victory out of Wellington’s grasp. Final score 54-46 Harbour.
