The next exciting chapter in the history of the Victoria Women’s Football League has begun.
The competition has increased to 32 clubs consisting of 42 teams this year – up from 27 clubs - and there has been a change to a divisional structure in 2014.
Premier division will remain, with the former Reserves, North/West and South/East divisions coming together to form Divisions one, two, three/four and five.
The third and fourth division will be split in two, and a finals series to follow in division three and the subsequently formed division four. Division five has been created as a development league to assist new clubs and clubs wanting to expand to a second or third team.
The bye has been eliminated from Premier division, with Bendigo entering as the eighth club for 2014.
The new structure was voted on by the VWFL clubs earlier this year as part of the change from November 1 to AFL Victoria managing the competition.
“A new era begins in 2014 for the VWFL,” said Darren Flanigan, AFL Victoria Competition Manager – Women’s Football.
“The interest in the competition and the growth of female participation has seen an increase in club numbers, which we hope will set the platform for the future.”
The competition kicks off on Sunday May 4 with a number of important clashes.
A number of feature representative games are highlighted in the fixture, with the competition to break during those weekends. They include:
- Vic Metro to take on Vic Country on the Queen’s Birthday weekend in both open age and under 21 games.
- After the success of the exhibition game between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs women’s teams last year, the concept will return in 2014 on Sunday June 29.
- The traditional ANZAC Day clash between the ADF and VWFL All Stars on ANZAC Day.
