The Black Diamond enjoyed their biggest attendance in a Grand Final with Newcastle City 12.15-87 defeating minor premiers, Cardiff City 11.14-80. Newcastle City finished third after the regular season but made a strong run in the finals to again claim the premiership in the Newcastle competition.
Interestingly, in the Reserves, Singleton won by a point courtesy of a 55 metre kick after the siren to break the tie.
The Tamworth Swans claimed the Tamworth AFL Premiership courtesy of a 13.13-91 to 11.16-82 victory over the Inverell Saints. In front of a 1,500 strong crowd, the Swans trailled at the first quarter but then led at every other change, with Gavin Knee winning best on ground honours with 5 goals.
The Summerland Grand Final was even closer. The Byron Magpies staged a comeback of the ages to come from 35 points behind with ten minutes remaining in the third quarter to overrun Lismore 12.9-81 to 12.4-76. Byron hit the lead with less than a minute to go, in a frantic finish that made headlines on the AFL Footy Show.
There was confusion at the end of the game when it was claimed that a Lismore player kicked the ball before the final siren for a goal whilst players were celebrating. Their subsequent appeal over the result was dismissed by an independent investigator.
Strange, but true!
