It was a Queen’s Birthday long weekend to remember for two Coffs Harbour Under-16 RAMS players when they travelled to Sydney to take part in a talent camp.
At the conclusion of the camp, the top 25 players will be chosen to play for the Under-16 RAMS in the upcoming NAB AFL Championships at Blacktown Olympic Park starting on July 3.
Brendan Norton and Nick Bailey, both from North Coffs Harbour, will be looking to standout on the weekend as they vie for a place in the final team.
AFL (NSW/ACT) State Talent Manager Darren Denneman said the camp provides players with one more opportunity to impress the coaching staff and to be selected in the team.
“This is the second camp and given what we saw last time we decided to bring everyone together again for another camp,” Denneman said.
“Normally we would have culled the list to 25 by now, but we wanted to bring everyone back to see how they are developing training wise.”
During the weekend camp will be a number of training sessions and game simulation activities to prepare players for the NAB AFL National Championships.
“This is an opportunity for players to develop their skills and to present themselves the best they can for selection in the NAB AFL Under-16 National Championships.”
“For us (the coaching staff) this is a chance to look at the players and see how far they’ve improved since last time we saw them.
“To stand out, the players need to show they have clean skills, have great kicking versatility and be generally consistent throughout the camp.”
The 25-man RAMS squad will be announced on Monday, June 21 at 5pm. The NAB AFL Under-16 National Championships will be held at Blacktown from July 3 to July 10.
The country’s best up and coming players will be on show during the Championships. With all AFL club talent scouts looking on, the time is now for players to impress on the big stage.
