North Coffs Harbour Kangaroos player Lachlan Jacobs will step out onto the SCG this Saturday to represent the QBE Sydney Swans Academy U16 team against the GWS Academy.
Jacobs was selected after showing promise in the Swans Academy internal trials last month and has continued his good form playing in both U18 and senior football for North Coffs in the early rounds of the AFL North Coast competition.
It’s a meteoric rise for a relative newcomer to the game who spent his early years playing rugby league and competing in surf-lifesaving.
Jacobs only decided to commit to AFL football three years ago after competing in an AFL NSW/ACT school gala day.
Mark Heaney, AFL NSW/ACT Manager for Northern NSW who manages the North Coast Academy program, says Lachlan always showed potential as an AFL footballer.
"Lachy showed attributes from the start that he would be a talented player as his fitness base was always going to be an advantage," said Heaney.
"What has been more impressive is the rapid improvement in his skills and game sense. He wants to learn and become a better player; he’ll often ring asking for an extra kicking session in his own time."
This Saturday’s match at the SCG is the second and final game of the series which is being used by the AFL NSW/ACT RAMS staff to select their squad for the 2013 Under 16 National Championships.
