EVERYONE expected Camden Haven to give its all in the first MNC local derby against Port Macquarie and the Bombers did. It just wasn’t quite enough though.
The Magpies claimed bragging rights in Saturday night’s encounter but only after a tight tussle.
Camden Haven jumped out of the blocks but will rue inaccurate kicking in front of goal in the first term.
The Bombers dictated terms to have 10 scoring to three in the opening stanza but could only convert the dominance into a 12 point lead.
Still leading by 18 points at the main break thanks to Jackson Ireland’s three first half goals, Camden Haven was unable to withstand a third quarter burst which saw Port Macquarie wrestle back the lead with captain Jesse Schmidt leading the way with two vital goals in the third term.
The Bombers didn’t go down without a whimper and pushed their bigger brothers in town all the way but couldn’t get a win with Port Macquarie’s experience enough to secure an eight point win.
Sawtell/Toormina entrenched itself in the top two with a six goal win on the road against Grafton.
Trent Mitchell and Aaron Clarke proved too much of a handful for the Tigers’ defensive unit kicking six and five goals respectively.
The win means the Saints sit in second position on the ladder and have a two game break to Grafton, Camden Haven and Port Macquarie.
The Coffs Swans continued its unbeaten start to the season with a comfortable victory in the Coffs Harbour local derby.
North Coffs tried hard all day and were competitive while it had the breeze at the players backs but the Swans were able to put the foot down in the first and third terms kicking 18 goals to nil in those terms to secure a 126 point win.
Nick Von Schill collected a bag of 10 goals in a day out to take the lead on the goalkicking table.
Von Schill has kicked 24 goals in the past four games to edge ahead of the Sawtell/Toormina quartet of Aaron Clarke, Jed Ellis-Cluff, Brendan Foote and Mikal Longbardi.
