THE fighting spirit of the new breed of AFL star out of Kempsey-Macleay is perhaps best represented by rising star Tom Steward.
Tom can be found each Saturday and Sunday either filling in on the forward line for the Macleay Valley Eagles under 18s in their debut senior AFLNC season.
On the Sundays he is either umpiring, running water or playing for the under 15 Eagles.
His “club before self” attitude has been noticed by opposition and teammates this year and with a playing passion for AFL that runs deep in his family bloodlines, Tom takes it all in his stride.
“I am blessed to have two boys that love the game as much if not more than me,” Tom’s mother Deb says.
Tom also plays alongside brother Jake who has been one of the most improved players for the Eagles’ Under 18s this year.
Deb can be seen ferrying her boys to and from games, doing the administrative work and taking the odd club photo to help reflect the growing passion for AFL in the Macleay region.
“Tom is there for us and always travels with his boots to under 18s just in case we are short,” coach Bruce Raeburn says.
“He only ever has positive things to say and if he can’t help on the field, he’ll be first to grab the water bottles or throw on the umpiring top.”
The Under 18 Eagles were soundly beaten by the Sawtell Saints at the weekend but with more troops to come back, and a likely finish in third spot on the ladder, a grand final berth this year is not beyond them.
Their next game is against the table-topping Port Magpies at Laurieton Oval on July 26 where you can bet the Steward brothers will both be there full os passion and energy trying to get their Eagles over the line.
