The biggest day of AFL school football seen on the coast will take place next Wednesday July 8 at Coffs Harbour’s BCU International Stadium & Leisure Park grounds.
The Regional Finals are a culmination of gala days held throughout the Clarence Valley, Coffs Coast, Nambucca Valley, Macleay Valley and Port Macqaurie/Hastings. Finals will be held in the Paul Kelly Cup (Grade 5 and 6), Swans Cup Under 14’s and Swans Cup Under 16s.
The winner of each Grand Final will progress to the NSW State Finals in Sydney during September.
In the Paul Kelly Cup, 2008 Regional Champions, Crescent Head Primary School have earned the right to defend their title. They should face stiff opposition, particularly from Toormina PS and Yamba PS who were very impressive in winning their local gala days.
Swans Cup Under 14 favouritism rests with Maclean High School after defeating South Grafton High in the Clarence Valley final. Maclean boasts many local AFL players form the Lower Clarence Eagles Under 14 side.
The Under 16 Swans Cup looks to be an open competition. Melville HS, Kempsey are the only school to have qualified in both U14 & U16 and should challenge strongly. A renowned AFL school is Toormina High who will prove hard to beat in this competition.
Games begin at 9.40 am in a round robin format and conclude with three consecutive Grand Finals on BCU International Stadium with the Paul Kelly Cup GF at 1.45pm followed by Swans Cup Under 14 at 2.30 and Under 16s at 3.20pm.
